Celebrating Advent

“And the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a loud command…” – 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Advent is what we call the season when we are reminded that we are waiting for the Savior. In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were waiting for a Messiah, the anointed one from God who would come to save them. That Messiah was Jesus, and He came quietly and very few noticed.

Next time, however, He will not come quietly. The Bible says he will come back with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet call of God (1 Thessalonians 4:16). It also says the following in Revelation 1:7 –

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,”
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;
and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”
So shall it be! Amen.

The first coming of Jesus was a secret at first to everyone except for those who saw with eyes of faith, but when Jesus comes back nobody will be able to miss it. Even His enemies will see and know that the One they denied can be denied no longer.

This gives us hope in many ways.

Today, we look around and sometimes wonder why evil people seem to get by with injustice and cruelty…but the day will come when the Son of God will be denied no longer. He will make everything right, and no injustice will go unanswered.

Today, we look around us and sometimes wonder if the suffering will ever end…but the day will come when the Son of God will return and make all things right.

As we go through Advent this year, we are reminded of the hope the Jews had of the coming Messiah and the glorious fulfillment of that hope in a manger in Bethlehem. We celebrate the coming of God on earth in the form of His only Son. But we also celebrate the living hope we have today that one day Jesus is coming back to make everything right.

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”- Revelation 22:20
