Cassandra is part of Col. Potter’s Mix-It-Up, non Cairn rescues. These dogs are not Cairns and are often, like Cassandra, a mix of several breeds. Like the Cairns Col. Potter rescues, these mixed breeds have been fully vetted for any health needs and are not ready for adoption until the vetting and an analysis of the dog’s personality have been done by an experienced Col. Potter foster parent. One advantage of adopting a Mix-It-Up rescue is that you may just get a very special little dog, like Cassandra. In addition, the adoption fee is considerably less than for a purebred Cairn.

Cassandra

Little Cassandra was picked up as a stray by a shelter. Thinking she was at least part Cairn, the shelter called in Col. Potter. The Cairn rescue knew, though very cute, Cassandra was not a Cairn. They also realized that she needed help, and so they welcomed her into their rescue. She is currently living with an experienced Col. Potter foster mom, Sandra.

Weighing in at about fifteen pounds and judged to be about two years old, Cassandra came in as heartworm positive. Col. Potter immediately had her vetted and treated for heartworm. Cassandra is now heartworm free and is a happy, healthy girl looking for her special person.

Col. Potter had a DNA test done on Cassandra. She is about 37% Chihuahua and about 12% Pomerania, Fox Terrier, and Pekingese. The remainder is not identifiable breeds. The DNA results showed no Cairn, but that doesn’t stop her from being a cute, very sweet girl. The DNA results along with her medical records will go with her adopter.

Cassandra probably had a home at one time and either was dumped or got lost. She is good on a leash and enjoys walks. She is also housebroken and is not destructive. Sandra says that Cassandra does not tolerate other dogs well but loves people. Although Sandra says she is not needy and can actually be quite an independent diva, she enjoys sitting next to Sandra and cuddling. She is a very sweet girl who would love a person or family of her own.

Although Cassandra does not care about toys, she does love to chew on a Nylabone, which she definitely doesn’t want to share. Sandra works full time and has a fairly large kennel that Cassandra stays in when Sandra is out of the house. With her beloved Nylabone, she keeps herself busy.

This sweet little girl does not need regular grooming. She is also not high energy and does not need a fenced in backyard. She would not do well with young children, but a family with older children, a couple, or a single person could be a good placement. Even if her adopter worked full time, as Sandra does, Cassandra would be fine in an enlarged kennel as long as she had her Nylabone. She would be happy in a city apartment, though she would need time to adjust to a new setting as Sandra lives in the country. Sandra feels this little girl is a gem and would be a wonderful companion where she could be an only dog.

During the holidays and in this time of Covid, rescues like Col. Potter are more in need of support than ever. So, when making out your gift list, don’t forget a donation to your favorite rescue organization. Most are 501C3 charities so donations are tax deductible.
