Christmas Fruit Drops

Taken from A Catered Christmas Cookie Exchange by Isis Crawford

The following recipe is from Carmel Ruffo, an excellent and prolific baker. Like my grandmother, she cooks by eye, taste, and smell. But luckily for us, unlike my grandmother she also writes things down.

1 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
2/3 cup buttermilk
3 2/3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 2/3 cups broken pecans
2 cups candied cherries, halved
2 cups dates, cut into very small pieces
Pecan halves

Mix shortening, sugar, and eggs. Stir in buttermilk. Blend together all dry ingredients. Add to wet ones. Stir in pecans, cherries, and dates. Chill dough for at least an hour.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. Place a pecan half on top of each cookie. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes 8 dozen cookies.
