Merry Wilkinson once thought she had the dream life in Manhattan, but it took losing both a cheating fiancé and her job as a deputy magazine style editor to discover that her true place was back in her hometown. Now the owner of Mrs. Claus’s Treasures, Merry fully endorses Rudolph, New York’s year-round celebration of Christmas. The ‘real’ upcoming December holiday looks to be darkened by a Grinch, when one of the owners of the Yuletide Inn suffers from a heart attack and his arriving son makes plans to make it a franchise. The news that Gord Olsen also intends to sell the rest of his father’s property to a Mega-Mart nearly matches the dire bleakness of a snow-less Christmas.
When Merry discovers Gord’s body stabbed through the heart with holly left on his chest, she can’t help but feel that the gesture was symbolic of his betrayal of the town’s holiday spirit. While there was no shortage of those infuriated and threatened by Gord’s actions, Merry is horrified to discover that it is her own father who is implicated and arrested for the murder. Born on Christmas and the spitting image of the Santa he embodies for Rudolph celebrations, Noel Wilkinson initiated the Christmas-centric theme that saved the town in the first place. That doesn’t stop the acting mayor from immediately canceling his Santa position, or gossip from spreading about his guilt. With a rival neighboring city rooting for Rudolph’s failure, Merry is propelled into clearing her father of murder, restoring him to his rightful place as Rudolph’s Santa, and of course saving Christmas.
This second in the Year-Round Christmas Mystery series continues to build upon this delightful town inhabited by fully developed characters. On the southern border of Lake Ontario, the town of Rudolph may have grasped onto the Christmas theme first solely as a marketing scheme, but it has since fully embraced the holiday spirit. Considering that Merry’s siblings are Chris, Eve, and Carole, it shouldn’t be too surprising that Merry continues the quirky tradition with an adorably growing Saint Bernard puppy she names Matterhorn. Merry has a surplus of riches with two handsome suitors vying for her attention, one the editor-in-chief of the Rudolph Gazette and the other town toymaker she once dated as a teen. There are an equal number of nemeses plaguing Merry as well, so along with the unusual occurrence of Christmas crimes their presence ensures for lively adventures in this smartly funny series written by an experienced author.
