Everyone knows Andy Carpenter loves dogs, especially Tara, his Golden Retriever. And everyone knows, he walks them in the park for a bedtime break. This time he has company. His secretary, Edna, who never does any work, is getting married and has brought her fiancé around to meet Andy and Laurie. When it’s time to walk the dogs, the fiancé goes along, leaving Edna and Laurie at the house for girl talk.

It’s been snowing, two feet at least, and Tara, who likes to walk in it, rather than on the sidewalk, spots something interesting to investigate. Much to Andy’s regret, she uncovers a human hand, presumably attached to a body. And when that body is identified, all hell breaks loose.

Vince, the local newspaper editor and good friend of Andy’s, is afraid Bobby, a reporter he fired, will be blamed. The story Bobby wrote was about the dead guy before he got dead and was proved to be all wrong. Accusations and talk of lawsuits followed, and there was an agreement to drop it all if Bobby became unemployed. It was no secret, Bobby held a grudge.

When questioned, Bobby can’t remember a thing, not a good alibi. Vince asks Andy, who is a lawyer who tries not to take any cases, ever, to defend Bobby. The fact that Bobby has a golden retriever pup and Vince has to care for her while Bobby’s in jail, entertains Andy enough he agrees.

Things go from bad to worse when a second murder happens and despite being in jail, Bobby is blamed for that one, too. Add in a few bombings, a couple more bodies, attempted murders, and Paterson, New Jersey, is having a bad run of luck in the disaster area.

This is book twenty-four in the popular series. Andy has a dry humor, some say obnoxious attitude, but once committed, he defends his clients with everything he’s got. Laurie, Marcus, Sam, Cory, and Simon Garfunkel (the retired K9, not the singer), round out the team. The books are the kind you want to read quickly to find out how Andy will save the day but also want to read slowly, to savor the story.

Look for book twenty-five, Holy Chow, next July. Rosenfelt has also written two spinoff books, the K Team mysteries, featuring Corey and Simon Garfunkel with Laurie, nine thrillers, and two non-fiction books about, of course, dogs.

Start hinting now with all these books on your holiday wish list. Like potato chips, one is not enough.
