Ava is a little black and tan Doxie who thinks she’s a bloodhound. She loves to spend time in the yard, nose to the ground, sniffing out varmints and other interesting smells.

Found as a stray wandering the streets, it was clear that she had once been cared for and probably loved, but no one came forward to claim her. She was spayed, house trained, heartworm negative and, except for some bad teeth, in overall good condition when she came into rescue. Susie from Dachshund Rescue of North America (DRNA) thinks she has had some obedience training as she walks well on her leash and always allows her human to go through the door first.

Ava

The eleven year old Doxie did not seem to be terribly affectionate, but once her bad teeth were fixed she seemed friendlier and more relaxed. Susie said that she is not a big time cuddler, but she does wag her tail in greeting. She loves car rides and, with her calm demeanor, is a good companion. She apparently has never played with toys as she shows no interest in any of the many toys Susie keeps on hand, but she does enjoy a good chewy.

Ava has adjusted to being fostered by Susie and has learned to fit in with the other dogs in the house. “She’s very mannerly at meal time and when I hand out the night time cookies,” said Susie, “she sleeps through the night with no problem.”

Susie is looking for a Doxie experienced home for Ava. She would be happy being an only dog and allowed to go her own way, but she tolerates other dogs as long as they are low key and don’t bother her. Susie has a cat and Ava has shown no interest in it, so she may be all right with a cat in her adoptive home.

Although she sits at the fence in Susie’s yard and wags her tail at the children playing next door, Susie feels a home without young children would be best for Ava because she needs a calm, structured environment. Ideal for Ava would be a settled older, single person or couple who are not away from home for long periods. She also needs a fenced in yard, of course, so she can practice her tracking.

Although a senior dog, Ava is healthy, sweet natured, and has a lot to offer the right person.
