Mystery Coming Attractions: November 2025

If there were a phrase like bah humbug for Thanksgiving I’d be saying it. I know, many people love this fall holiday overshadowed by its seasonal siblings Halloween and Christmas, and commercially passed over for Black Friday, but I do not. Despite the delicious tradition of roast turkey and the lack of gifting pressure to recommend it, the holiday depresses me. Largely because my family has dwindled down significantly thanks to Covid, and those remaining are notorious for fighting more than thanking. Given this, instead of focusing on the few new Thanksgiving themed book releases you’ll find in this month’s column for our challenge, I’ve decided to focus on what Thanksgiving should represent–gratitude.

I have several favorite authors whose books I will purchase sight unseen and synopsis unread. I only need to see their name and the word pre-order and I’m stoked! I instantly hop over to Amazon and give my money willingly, and with a smile, because I know it’s going to be good! But, once the book is delivered and I’ve consumed its contents, I often fail to leave a review on Amazon, or email the author to say thank you; I appreciate the months of work you put into a book that I devoured in one day. Kind of like the Thanksgiving meals my mother made when I was a child. She’d plan in the summer, starting with the foods she’d preserve from our garden. She’d water-bath can the vegetables for the table, and for the pot pie she’d make with leftover turkey, along with her pie fillings and applesauce from our apple trees. She’d make and freeze the pie crusts, dessert dough, and pastry fillings. She worked half a year for a day’s worth of gluttony, and never once did I say thank you and mean it with the full weight it deserved (pun intended).

The KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge theme for November is about keeping Thanksgiving in our hearts all month long by showing our gratitude for authors. Think of it as author appreciation month. Once you read a book you’re thankful for, leave a review wherever you purchased the book and anywhere else you feel comfortable doing so. You could even take it a step further and email the author or share the book with your book group. The important thing is to keep the authors we love in business and reviews help do that. This month, instead of a Featured Five, I’ve opted for a Stoked Six to highlight three new authors, and three favorite authors, who have a book release this month that has me feeling stoked to read it and grateful they wrote it.

Three of the books on my Stoked Six list are new-to-me authors who have books that speak to things I’m passionate about. Cinnamon Wishes by Thea Black doesn’t only feature tea, one of my favorite things, but it takes the “wishes granted” trope and turns it on its head with an intelligently done sinister premise. Death Comes to Jane Austen Town by Rosemary Stevens takes my love for Jane Austen and contemporizes it by having a present-day town work together to save itself from a casino-resort development, all while paying homage to Jane’s 250th birthday. Murder at Maretail Manor by A. S. McClatchie speaks to my passion for animals and the equestrian sport. As a former high school equestrian coach, I find it refreshing to see a cozy mystery set in the equestrian world.

The three remaining books on my Stoked Six list come from favorite authors whose books I buy sight unseen. Murder at Donwell Abbey is the second book in the Emma Knightly Mysteries by Vanessa Kelly. This is a fantastic series featuring Jane Austen’s protagonist Emma (Woodhouse) Knightly as a shrewd and witty sleuth. A must read for JA fans! Revenge, Served Royal is the third book in the Lady Petra Inquires series by Celeste Connally. This is a Regency-era read with a Bridgerton feel so it already ticks all my boxes. But, in this installment it’s autumn and Lady Petra is a judge at Queen Charlotte’s patisserie contest for the ton, giving me Great British Bake-Off vibes I just can’t resist! Trust me when I say you’ll love each of these authors’ series. Finally, the last book on my list is Murder Most British by Helena Dixon. Her protagonist Miss Jane Treen reminds me of a young Miss Jane Marple during the background of 1940s Devon with a thrilling codebreaker, top-secret, twisty plot dynamic. As an Agatha Christie loving Anglophile, and World War II codebreaker enthusiast, I find this series very exciting and a must read even if you’re none of those things. As always, if my suggestions don’t appeal to you, please check out the amazing new releases and soon-to-be released books on offer for November. You will not be in want of a good book or an excellent author if you do.

Stoked Six

Some Christmas wishes should remain unspoken. Some secrets are meant to stay buried. When tea witch Lia Winfield brews a festive cinnamon-spice blend for the Twelve Days of Christmas, she expects to spread holiday cheer through Farnwick. Instead, her magical tea compels customers to voice their deepest Christmas wishes—and not all wishes are as harmless as they seem. At first, the magic creates beautiful connections. Neighbors help neighbors, lonely villagers find companionship, and the community stitches itself together through shared seasonal hopes. But when Colonel Fitzwarren reveals a forty-eight-year-old Christmas Eve secret involving a stolen ornament and wrongful accusations, Lia realizes her well-intentioned magic has unleashed something far more dangerous than truth-telling. Wishes come from deeper places than facts. They expose hopes, fears, and buried guilt that people may not even understand themselves. And when stressed tourists at the Harbor Inn’s Christmas dinner start voicing resentments under the influence of Lia’s tea, holiday cheer transforms into open warfare. Jeremy warns her that magical compulsion—no matter how benevolent—removes people’s choice about when and how to share their private feelings. But abandoning the Christmas magic means disappointing the entire village and missing the perfect opportunity to help heal old wounds. When mysterious visitor Patricia Cromwell arrives with the legendary Ashworth Star—the very ornament at the heart of the decades-old scandal—Lia discovers that some Christmas gifts require patience and wisdom to achieve their intended purpose. The ornament’s return on Christmas Eve could finally bring reconciliation between families divided by suspicion and misunderstanding. Can Lia learn to wield her Christmas magic with wisdom rather than mere good intentions? Or will the Twelve Days celebration destroy relationships that have taken years to build? — Cinnamon Wishes by Thea Black

When the local bottling plant closes, employment in Boring, Virginia dries up. The mayor is under pressure to accept an offer from Dale Casino Resorts to build a massive gambling complex. The prospect would bring jobs, but it would destroy the traditional, small-town life the community loves. All seems lost until Kay Starling is inspired by her love of iconic author Jane Austen to reinvent Boring into Jane Austen Town! Together with her family, friends, and neighbors, Kay launches a Jane Austen Festival culminating in a grand Birthday Ball to honor the author’s 250th birthday and #PartyLikeIts1811. But will the murder of the devious dancing master spoil their plans to save the town? With Detective Gordon focusing on shy Betsy Bell Ward, Kay vows to find the killer herself. Because it’s a truth universally acknowledged that every murder needs a determined sleuth. — Death Comes to Jane Austen Town by Rosemary Stevens

Emma’s spirits are elevated after she and husband George Knightley host a joyful holiday celebration at the Hartfield estate. But it’s instantly a bitter January when her father makes an unexpected announcement—he and Miss Hetty Bates have decided to marry. Not only must Emma relinquish her role as mistress of the household, but must also accept the reality that the excitable Miss Bates will become her stepmother. More unwanted news arrives during an extravagant betrothal ball at Donwell Abbey, the grand Knightley estate where Emma and George will soon permanently reside. Nearly every villager in Highbury revels in the dazzling affair—except Emma’s hardworking lady’s maid, Prudence Parr. To Emma’s horror, Prudence is found dead, sprawled across the stones of the library terrace. The woman’s tragic fall is quickly ruled a terrible accident, and whispers circulate around personal troubles leading up to her untimely demise. But Emma’s instincts tell her that something far more sinister is at play. Now, Highbury’s matchmaker-turned-sleuth vows to outwit a cunning criminal before an innocent man loses his freedom—or Donwell Abbey plunges into a darker mystery. — Murder at Donwell Abbey by Vanessa Kelly, Kensington

Small town journalist Holly has loved horses since she was a little girl, but it is only now in her mid-40s that she finally has a horse of her own, Linnet. But when the matriarch of a prestigious equestrian family is found dead, Holly finds herself drawn into the role of amateur sleuth. Tatty Bilsbury needed no introduction in the equestrian world. Renowned horse trainer, British Olympic showjumping medalist, and matriarch of the Bilsbury family, which produced a further dozen talented riders. At the dress rehearsal party for her wedding to what would be her fourth husband. Tatty is found dead in the hay barn of her stables. When the police fail to see anything suspicious in her death, Holly finds the bit between her teeth as she takes the mystery on for herself. — Murder at Maretail Manor by A. S. McClatchie, April Showers Publishing

Version 1.0.0

Big Ben chiming in the distance, chilly walks along the river Thames, cocktails at the Ritz … and a government secretary dead? Only Jane Treen can solve the case! London, 1941. Miss Jane Treen is faced with another mysterious disappearance within her Secret Detective Agency’s team. Tabitha Moore, a government typist, was on her way to meet Jane with vital information about some secret codes. But she didn’t turn up for work and has seemingly vanished without a trace. Then Jane and her colleague, handsome codebreaker Arthur Cilento, receive a call: a body has been found, and it matches Tabitha’s description. It quickly becomes clear that Tabitha’s death was not due to ongoing air raids on the city: the silk scarf tied tightly around her neck suggests otherwise. The prime suspect is Tabitha’s fiancé Leo Cavendish, a dashing government official, but there are plenty of others with a motive, too. Jane and Arthur scrutinize those around Tabitha at work and at home, including a charming newsreader reporting on government affairs, a jealous pianist in love with Leo, and a known womanizer and gambler fond of causing trouble. Together, Jane, Arthur, and her fluffy ginger cat Marmaduke hole up in her London townhouse with black coffee in plentiful supply and a roaring fire in the grate. But just as they begin to piece together the puzzle, someone else is found dead. It’s clear they need to step up and catch the killer on the loose in the big smoke, before it’s their turn next. — Murder Most British by Helena Dixon, Bookouture

September 1815. Autumn is in the air as Lady Petra Forsyth and some of the most illustrious members of the ton descend upon Windsor Castle for a week of royal celebrations, with the highlight being Queen Charlotte’s inaugural patisserie contest for the best bakers employed by England’s finest houses. Not only is Lady Petra’s own cook one of the contestants, but Her Majesty has requested that Petra herself serve as one of the judges. Petra’s happiness at tasting delicious cakes and biscuits only increases at finding her beloved Aunt Ophelia in attendance at Windsor, as well as Sir Rufus Pomeroy. As England’s most famous former royal chef-turned-cookbook author, Sir Rufus is slated to present his best recipes to the Queen during the festivities, with Petra being granted an early viewing in the royal library. Yet upon arrival, Petra instead encounters a frantic housemaid pointing to a body of one of Her Majesty’s guests—and to the valet still tugging at the silk ribbon used to strangle the victim. What’s more, the valet turns out to be Oliver Beecham, the ne’er-do-well brother of Petra’s own lady’s maid, Annie. But as Oliver is hauled away to the dungeons, he protests his innocence, claiming the late guest argued with several aristocrats, including the Prince Regent and Petra’s Aunt Ophelia, and boasted about hiding a potentially scandalous document within the vastness of Windsor Castle. When some poisoned tea meant for Petra is consumed by one of her fellow judges, it’s clear the real killer is still walking the castle’s halls. Indeed, in order to prove the innocence of Annie’s brother and find the incriminating document, Petra will need to act like a lady, eat like a chef, and think like one of Her Majesty’s best spies before a murderer can turn the celebrations from sweet to royally deadly. — Revenge, Served Royal by Celeste Connally, Minotaur Books
