The Cat House on the Kings: More Than Just Cats

Despite the name of Cat House on the Kings, we also rescue dogs when the need is urgent. This morning after another fruitless effort to trap the last remaining kitten in the bushes at the Selma Wal-Mart, I noticed cars swerving around a small tan dog that was running full speed down the center of a busy road. Along with two other ladies who stopped to assist, we attempted to capture the dog. With the help of a school bus and a semi truck, traffic was stopped while we ran around trying to catch the frightened dog. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts we were unable to catch the dog and local animal control was notified.

Abandoned Pit-Bull Finds Home

On a happier note, the abandoned Pit Bull that I recently took in has been adopted by a wonderful couple. Sherman, now known as Bullet, was left behind when his family moved. I would stop by daily to feed and water the poor guy. One day when I stopped to feed him, I discovered he had been attacked, likely by a pack of coyotes. His back and neck were covered with bite marks. I brought him to my home and nursed him back to health after a trip to the vet. The Cat House on the Kings neutered him for me. He is just the sweetest dog there ever was, but he likes to chase cats and with nine cats at my home, that was a problem. I posted Bullet’s picture on the Fresno Bully Facebook page. As luck would have it, someone I knew spotted my posting and called to inquire. Their dog had recently passed and they were in the market for another dog. They came to see Bullet and it was love at first sight. They took him home that day and are now a happy family!

Bullet, Conni & another rescue Pit Bull

I have been involved in animal rescue in one way or another for as long as I can remember. From the first time I brought home a stray kitten as a child, I knew it was in my heart and destiny to help animals in need. I have climbed trees, crawled through bushes, under houses and even knocked a hole in a wall to retrieve kittens. I hung upside-down by my feet to rescue my own cat that had fallen into a deep irrigation pipe. I tromped through huge weeds in a ditch, in the dark of night while wearing high heels to rescue three dumped kittens. I once put five filthy abandoned puppies in the back seat of my new car. Sometimes a situation just screams for immediate action.

Old Dog Needed Help

Odie-Before

One of the worst cases I have ever come across was a case of dog neglect. I was notified that a neighborhood dog was suffering from extreme neglect. When I went to the home, I discovered a fully-grown, white German Shepard who was just skin and bones. He was tethered with a large chain, like the kind used to tow cars. The dog was so weak and the chain so heavy, that the dog was unable to stand. The dog was also quite old. He weighed only 35 pounds, half of what his minimum weight should have been. With no objections from the owners I carried the dog to my car and whisked him off to the vet for treatment. We kept the old boy, calling him O.D. for “Old Dog.” He quickly filled out nicely and lived for about a year in peace and comfort before succumbing to a stroke. The point I am trying to drive home here is that there are times when we must act in order to save the innocent lives of helpless animals. With the current problems plaguing the Fresno County animal control services, it is vital that we, as caring citizens, pitch in to help whenever the need arises. It might not be easy or convenient but it will always be the right thing to do.

Marmalady

Marmalady

One of our more notable cat rescues is the now famous, “Marmalady.” Rescued from near death in Reedley, the orange colored darling of The Cat House on the Kings has been adopted and now resides near the beach in Canada. Marmalady’s compelling story of survival and her gigantic round eyes have literally captured the hearts of thousands around the globe. Foster mom, Tammy Barker, kept everyone updated on Facebook with pictures and the latest news on her medical progress. Marmalady’s new mom has allowed her to have her own Facebook page. Marmalady now has a loyal following of 2,239 friends from all over the world and the numbers continue to grow! There are two books in the works on Marmalady’s journey from a throwaway kitten at death’s door to a thriving three-legged cat living the life of privilege in Canada. Our December newsletter will feature more details of Marmalady’s adventures. We hope to be speaking with the two young ladies who actually rescued Marmalady after hearing her piteous cries coming from the bushes. You can follow the delightful antics of “Marmalady Lemieux” and her friends on Facebook.

Do You Have A Cat From Hell?

Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell is accepting applications for their show. If you have a cat whose behavior has you at your wit’s end, you should consider applying to be on the show. For complete details on how to apply for “My Cat From Hell” go to their website.

The Cat House on the Kings has a candidate for My Cat From Hell. Babba is an incredibly gigantic Maine Coon who is one mean feline. He barely tolerates humans and he hates other animals. The woman who surrendered Babba was fearful that he was going to harm her baby. Lynea was skeptical at first, she had heard it before. Lots of people erroneously believe that it is unsafe to have cats around babies. Babba turned out to be the exception to the rule. Lynea kept Babba at her house that first day for observation. He seemed okay. Toward the end of the day, Lynea walked between Babba and another cat and as Lynea puts it, “Babba went for my jugular!” Babba now has his own house with a privately fenced yard. Lynea claims that in her 20 years of rescuing over 21,000 cats, this is the only cat she has ever encountered that scares her. We are submitting an application for Babba to My Cat From Hell in the hopes that they can possibly help. Our goal is for Babba to be able to get along with the other animals so that he will be able to freely roam the 12-acre sanctuary.

Buy a Book & Help the Cat House on the Kings

If you are into the mystery medieval genre, then you might want to check out a new mystery novel by Jeri Westerson called Blood Lance. Think, ‘private detective for hire’, but with knights, swords, fair maidens and the requisite search for a prized relic. The relic is supposed to make the owner unbeatable in battle. The twists and turns of the story will keep the reader riveted until the very end. Why am I promoting a medieval mystery book, you ask? Are there cats in the book? The reason is because the author is generously donating a portion of the sales from books purchased through the link below to the Cat House on the Kings! Shop early for Christmas, Blood Lance would make an excellent gift for any mystery book lover! (the purchase link is at the end of the KRL review & guest post by Jeri https://kingsriverlife.com/10/13/blood-lance-by-jeri-westerson/)

  1. Love the article! I can totally relate to Jackie…I too have gone through many “antics” to save an animal and have never thought twice about it. I would do it again and again if the situation presented itself. All my fur babies have been rescues from either off the streets or from shelters.

  4. Thank you Jackie for your wonderful article on The Cat House and your own private rescue stories. I grew up in a animal lover household. My parents and sister were my guide on the wonders of the world outside of the human race. I too have rescued cats, dogs, wild birds, lizards, frogs and snakes. My life would be so empty animals…. 9. Thank you Jackie for caring enough to write about the wonderful compassionate work that goes on 24/7 at Cat House. Writers like you are a powerful force for postive change in the world today. The section about O.D. was so sad but thankfully had a happy ending. With your writing and your teaching of yoga I am sure that you are helping to make a big difference– opening our eyes so that soon we human beings will come to respect other animals and see them as the people they are endowed with souls, feelings and aspirations.

  10. Enjoyed the column today. Cute kitty photo. A year ago I adopted a rescue poodle dog who has turned out to be such a sweet dog. To think that some people neglect pets is hard to take. Thank you for the work you do to help animals.

  11. I’ve been rescuing lost dogs for years now; usually someone’s dog who got out of the yard and into the streets, but occasionally a case of real neglect has crossed my path. I think they know me by name at the humane society. I’m so glad to know other people do this, too, as I can’t be everywhere! There are so many suffering animals out there, it’s frightening. Thank you for your reassuring article!
