“I’m going to Hell.”

“Don’t feel so bad. It beats Fresno.”

I had to share that snippet of dialogue with you, even if I don’t believe it!

In Richard Kadrey’s The Getaway God, James Stark (a.k.a. Sandman Slim) is a half-angel, human-mothered Nephilim, not too popular in any realm. He probably has frequent-flyer miles to Hell and back. Stark even was Lucifer for a while. Now, he’s trying to prevent the end of the universe…or cause it. He isn’t sure which he should do. The Angra Om Ya, the Old Gods, are still mad about the God who took over this universe and kicked them out of it. God was depressed over the state of humankind and broke himself into five beings, and they are getting weaker.

This is a gritty, profane novel, where Angra cultists commit suicide and build altars and whole chapels out of butchered body parts. Los Angeles is getting so much rain it’s seeping under the doors. Paranormal Homeland Security agents are headed by a Holy Roller from Nevada who hates supernaturals. He calls them “pixies”. book

Stark’s demon girlfriend is turning bi-polar behavior into trigonometry. He runs a video store that rents movies that don’t exist (Ask a film expert, who could probably come up with several titles named in the book), managed by a magician who he decapitated and now uses a prosthetic body. (Dead isn’t a permanent condition in a series where you can go to Hell, Heaven, or anywhere between).

Wild Bill Hickock runs a bar in the wastelands of Hell. A self-mummified Asian monk is trying to unlock the secrets of a key of destruction as he drinks himself to death in an unusual way. On top of that, Stark is dealing with a killer who he has already killed twice (they are not friends). This all happens with a large dose of coarse language and lots of wisecracks.

The sixth Sandman Slim book is urban-fantasy noir, told in the first person like the narration of a sleazy detective flick. You’ll be repulsed, you’ll be fascinated, and you’ll find yourself giggling inappropriately.
