Halloween seems to be the season for The Rocky Horror Show. I have now seen at least three different productions during this time of year. The latest is the production by the Visalia Players currently on stage at the Ice House Theatre through November 1, with a special performance on Halloween night.

There isn’t a funner way to celebrate Halloween than with this outrageous, over the top show! You can even come in costume if you like, and you actually get to participate in the show. If you have never been, this is an experience everyone should have at least once.

The Rocky Horror Show is kind of a spoof of the old silly 50s/60s sci-fi movies. Typical boy and girl next door, newly engaged, break down on the side of the road–Brad (Corey Ralston) and Janet (Sadie Purcell). They go to an old castle looking to use the phone and their life is never the same again. A very unusual and creepy butler/handyman, Riff Raff (Garren James) greets them at the door, along with a host of characters that look like a cross between Goth and saloon singers in the old west. Finally, they meet the master of the house, Dr. Frank’N’Furter (Sean Hopper), who is almost beyond description. He is a cross dressing, over the top character. Frank’N’Furter is also a mad scientist of the 50s sci-fi variety with a different sort of twist, he is trying to make for himself the perfect man–enter now Rocky (Bailey Beach). The story goes through many twists and turns, with a fitting ending for an old sci-fi spoof.

Sean Hopper’s lovely voice sends chills down your spine, and there are even times when he makes you feel sorry for this character who seems to derive pleasure from messing with the lives of others. Corey has some nice vocal moments, as do others. Krystle McWells, and her powerful voice, provides a perfect beginning to the show as the Usherette singing, “Science Fiction/Double Feature.” But what this show is most about is just having fun and that you get to do in spades! Some of my favorite songs are “Sweet Transvestite,” “I’m Going Home,” and of course who doesn’t love “Time Warp!”

Be aware though that this is not a family show! There is a lot of sex, and crude language-so if that bothers you, this is not the show for you and do not take little ones. But that being said, if you are looking to have some crazy fun this Halloween season don’t miss The Rocky Horror Show at the Ice House, 410 E. Race Ave., in Visalia. Tickets can be purchased online at www.visaliaplayers.org. Rocky Horror is more than a show–it’s an experience!
