Halloween with Zoe is the Best!
In 2013, Kathi Daley published the first Zoe Donovan Mystery book, Halloween Hijinks, at, well of course, Halloween. The season is always a big deal for residents of Ashton Falls, as well as the Donovan-Zimmerman family and friends. However Halloween always seems to herald a dead body, spooky shenanigans, some personal peril, and an accompanying investigation that also interrupts the festivities. Along with costume shopping, putting up decorations, carving pumpkins, and prepping for a friends and family gathering, Zoe and Zak, often approved by local law enforcement, engage in informal interrogations, evidence gathering, uncovering the motive, and revealing the “perp.” Always fun!

The Henderson House: earns 5/5 Haunted Houses…Clever Fun!

What better holiday to set a mysterious house not a stranger to death…and ghosts?

Life has changed quite a bit for Zoe, and she worries that she just might be too busy to enjoy Halloween the way she wants: putting up oodles of decorations, buying cute costumes for her infant daughter, organizing the local zombie run, and hosting her Halloween Spectacular. So, when she gets an anonymous call about a barking dog trapped in the old Henderson House, a creepy place that has “seen more than its share of death,” she thinks it might be Zak, her husband, providing some pre-Halloween excitement. Well, maybe not now that she finds a dead body in the basement. However, Zoe has a niggling feeling that she was meant to find the body, the crime scene closely resembles another murder from five years past, and then there’s the vampire puncture marks on the victim’s neck…

Oh, I love sharing my Halloween with Kathi Daley! I can always count on her signature clever mystery including twists and turns, characters that have continued to grow, side dramas with raising kids and fostering lots of animals, a nail-biting “It’s you?” ending, and pumpkins to keep me engaged. Her writing has a descriptive first-person narrative and entertaining banter easily finished in one afternoon. Just don’t read late at night! Kathi knows no one investigates murder 24/7, so she has created a family growing over the years and side stories with a Haunted House, a school dance, teens, infants, and a great-grandmother on the mend. She illustrates friendships and deep love between her characters, and although Zoe goes off on her own, she doesn’t circumvent law enforcement as she shares and gives and receives updates. It all encompasses a real drama with real people, reactions, and conclusions.

And then my two favorite words…recipes included! Here are some suggestions for your own Halloween Spectacular: Spinach Tortellini Soup, Sauce Pot Meatballs, Chuck Wagon Casserole, and Chicken Divan. Yummm!

The Zoe Donovan Mystery books were my introduction to the literary world of Kathi Daley, and with every single book, I have seen the changes and the growth of all the characters. However, she has nine other series, with a new one to be released in November, that also showcase her entertaining creativity. Some are straightforward in their realism, and others have a paranormal twist that is done so well that you almost believe in ghosts and magical cats.

It’s just not Halloween anymore for me without a new Kathi Daley Halloween themed book. I am such a Zoe fan!! I had given up reading, had cancer and was confined to a bed. I read book 1, Halloween Hijinks after having cataract surgery, and I was back being a reader again. You have many books and series since then. And I am almost 5 years in remission, retired, executive director for while animal rescue, and read all the time. What a difference 5 years makes!!! Thank you for giving me back reading.
