My wife (and the editor of KRL) has asked me often why I love sports so much. The great thing about a sporting event is that every one is a fresh drama – and you never know how it will turn out. The ups and downs of following a team can really be a grind, and Saturday’s football game between the Reedley College Tigers and the Fresno City College Rams is a perfect example.
The Tigers fought and fought all night long, as did the Rams. The Tigers had the lead late in the game, and then they self destructed in the final three minutes, handing the Rams a 24-21 win.
Three penalties on the Tigers, during the Rams final drive of the game, sealed the deal as Fresno won the game on a short touchdown run by Nate Jones with 2:39 left in the game.
The game was a see-saw affair from the second quarter on. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers struck first with a 29-yard TD pass from quarterback Austen Bray to receiver Terrell McLaughlin.
In the third quarter, Reedley regained the lead when defensive back Deshaun Dean recovered a fumble and ran it in from the Rams one-yard line. Moments later, the Rams responded with a brilliant 61-yard touchdown run by Jones.
The Tigers led for the final time on a TD pass from Bray to McLaughlin, and seemed to have the game under control until disaster struck.
The Tigers now have two weeks to think about the one that got away. Next Saturday is a bye week, before the Tigers return to action on October 17, when they host West Hills College.
It’ll take me that long to recover as well…. If I’m lucky.
