Witches, Black Cats, and Ghouls, Oh My! Shivers galore in this month’s mysteries. Also, welcome several new series from your favorite authors.

bookIt’s Ghost on the Case in the eighth Bailey Ruth ghost mystery by Carolyn Hart. Our favorite ghost is sent to Adelaide, Oklahoma, to help a woman steal $100,000 ransom money to get her younger sister back. Robbery is not exactly a heavenly enterprise. Bailey discovers that the woman was asked to open the safe for her boss at a luncheon with his friends. Which one got greedy and kidnapped the sister?

bookMeanwhile, in Natchez, Mississippi, odd things have been happening in the antebellum house Cliffwood. The French room has become the focal point of some very ghostly events. When the owners ask the Ducote sisters An’gel and Dickce to investigate, the couple suspect a more human presence at work. When a relative of the family is found dead, the Ducotes must go through a haunted history to nab the killer. Fixing to Die is the fourth Southern Ladies mystery by Miranda James.

bookWe find witch Annabelle Britton and her cat Alistair in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Now that she knows she comes from a family of witches, Annabelle and her coven are trying to stop magic and murder. When she takes Alistair to the vet, they meet Ruby the Attitude Cat, spokes-feline for a pet food brand. But when the vet winds up dead and Ruby missing, Annabelle thinks the murderer used magic. It’s up to her and her feline to catch the killer. Familiar Motives is the third in the A Witch’s Cat series by Delia James.

bookWitch-in-training and budding journalist Ember Rose discovers the residents of magical town Starry Hollow are experiencing their worst nightmares in real life. The curse needs to be lifted, but first Ember must figure out the six journalistic questions: Who, What, When Where, Why, and How. Can she stop the spell before her worst nightmares come true? Annabel Chase gives us Magic and Mischief in the third Starry Hollow Witches outing.

bookDeath Overdue is the debut novel of Allison Brook and first in the Haunted Library mysteries (which fits in with our Halloween theme). Carrie Singleton is offered a job to head programs and events at the spooky library with ghost in residence in Clover Ridge, Connecticut. The first event is a retired homicide detective who says he knows who murdered a library aide fifteen years ago. Suddenly he keels over and dies. Turns out he was poisoned. Carrie thinks the murder was by the same man who murdered the aide. Thank goodness she has a ghost to sleuth with.

NEW TREATS FROM FAVORITE AUTHORS

bookIn need of a pick-me-up? Go to Miracle Springs, North Carolina, where there’s a hot spring that can cure whatever ails you. If that doesn’t work, go to Miracle Books for a scone from the Gingerbread House bakery. While there, tell Nora Pennington your troubles and she’ll prescribe the perfect novel to ease your pain. But when a business man misses his appointment and is found dead on the train tracks, Nora forms The Secret, Book and Scone Society. To join, you have to divulge your darkest secret. Not only will you solve crimes, but you’ll also discover your own courage and purpose. Ellery Adams gives us this new series combining books and magic.

bookVicki Delany introduces us to her new Ashley Grant series with White Sand Blues. When paramedic Ashley finds her boyfriend in bed with another woman, she moves out of his house and moves to the Caribbean. The action starts as soon as she lands on the tiny island and an ambulance picks her up en route to a body floating off the beach of an exclusive club. Turns out the corpse is the father of a woman Ashley knows from high school. The daughter thinks her new stepmother is the killer and asks Ashley to help prove it.

bookAnother woman scorned! Sloan Krause walks in on her husband and the barmaid going at it and kicks him to the curb. She’s spent her life in Leavenworth, Washington, learning how to brew beer. Now she sets out to work at a hip nano-brewery. However, she barely starts the new job when one of the brewery’s competitors is found dead in the fermenting tub (Yuck!), and her husband is arrested. He may be a cheater, but Sloan knows he’s no murderer. It’s Death on Tap in Ellie Alexander’s first Sloan Krause mystery.
