Death of a Flying Nightingale is an amazing dive into the little-known history of the WAAF Nursing Orderlies. These women had only six weeks of nursing training and flew, sometimes twice a day, into the war zone of WWII, delivering needed supplies and munitions, and returning with wounded soldiers. This started three weeks after D-Day and went through post-WWII and the collection of POWs from German concentration camps. They rescued over 100,000 soldiers and POWs with no known fatalities.
Walker based her historical fiction on periodicals that are not readily available, oral histories, and just a few previously published books. With these few resources, impeccable historical research, and beautiful wordsmithing, Walker has created tangible characters that work their way into your heart. You’ll feel their fears, triumphs, and grief as the nursing orderlies travel through the war, caring for the casualties including broken and lost limbs, gunshot wounds, and the shell-shocked (then known as “happy boys”). And just to remind you, they did all this after only six weeks of training.
Through Walker’s impeccable research, I learned so much about these courageous women and how little is known and documented about them. Walker’s characters seem so real that when they are suddenly targeted by a murderer, the mystery becomes an integral part of the story, woven seamlessly into the fabric of history.
Laura Jensen Walker is an award-winning author of more than 20 books including the #1 Amazon bestselling, Agatha-nominated Murder Most Sweet. I can’t wait to crack into her list of publications.
