FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare has spent the last five years chasing Nicholas Fox, Number Seven on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List. Much to her dismay, Fox has recently been enlisted by the government to help capture criminals who elude conventional law enforcement. Raised by a career covert-ops army officer, Kate has been trained in weaponry and self-defense from an inappropriately young age. She’s also a rule follower, and nothing infuriates—or intrigues—her more than Nick’s innate ability to lie, steal, and run a long con.

Their latest target is Evan Trace, whose multi-million dollar casinos are fronts laundering money for terrorists. With a hands-off order from the White House, the CIA is unable to touch Trace and his illegal operations in Macau. Not true of Fox and O’Hare, although if caught they will be disavowed by the government. book

Nothing is ever simple with Nick Fox’s schemes, and with government funding, no expense will be spared. A rescue mission to Oahu to settle a food truck war adds unexpected credibility, along with a dangerous player, to their assignment. A missive from Kate’s boss that she “please take care of yourself, limit the property damage, and try to avoid killing anyone,” allows Kate and Nick to bring back his shady specialists and her father’s friends, including an overly aspiring actor and a vehicle-kleptomaniac wheelwoman.

This hilarious caper novel starts off with a James Bond-esque action-packed opening and rockets to an ingeniously crafted conclusion. Nick and Kate’s undeniably hot chemistry is matched only by their witty banter, and their relationship edges toward territory that makes the by-the-book Kate squirm. Nick’s past accomplices return to delight readers, but even more exhilarating are the authentic descriptions of Hawaii, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, and Macau. Evanovich and Goldberg continue their impressive track record of crafting novels that are as full of thrills as they are laugh-out-loud moments. The cliffhanger ending ensures that the next in this series can’t come soon enough.
