Details at the end of this post on how to win a copy of The Cat, the Sneak, and the Secret, along with a link to purchase the book.
With a one-week countdown until her wedding to security expert Tom Stewart, Jillian Harte is beginning to feel the pressure. That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have time for what’s truly important to her though, and at the top of that list is helping Tom’s stepson adopt the cat shelter feline who has stolen his heart. Not only is the mischievous Magpie an escape artist, but the adorable tortoise kitty is a kleptomaniac sneak thief with a secret stash of lost mementos and oddities. Her latest escapades prove to be far more alarming than cute when they discover Magpie covered in blood and wrapped around a mysterious locket.
Jillian may have somehow convinced Deputy Candace Carson to don a bridesmaid dress for the impending nuptials, but until then the deputy will be occupied investigating the murder of developer Rhett Marner. His surly employees, secretive wife, imperious ex-wife, and very estranged relationships with his children ensure that there are suspects galore, and because of Candace’s admitted impatience with anything pretentious, she ensnares Jillian’s aid as a buffer with the questioning. Jillian still hasn’t finished making alterations on her grandmother’s wedding dress, but she can no more resist the plea from her friend than she can ignore the wounded—and very angry—young woman who has just lost her father.
This seventh of the series is dominated by Jillian’s impressive maternal instincts and compassion. Although she may have no biological children, Jillian displays so much empathy and kindness to her stepdaughter and stepson-to-be that her guidance and mentoring of Lindsey Marner is not surprising. Considering that she just installed an interactive video-feed to monitor her furry babies, the thought of what will soon be a household of five felines doesn’t intimidate her a bit. Deep emotional story lines, character growth, and of course adorable kitties ensure the continued success of this reliably delightful mystery series.
