Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of Survivors Will Be Shot Again, and a link to pre-order it from Amazon, as well as a link to purchase it from an indie bookstore where a portion goes to help support KRL.

Sheriff Dan Rhodes hasn’t had a day off in a long while so now seemed as good a time as any. He was at the Pak-a-Sak pondering whether or not to end his boycott against Dr. Pepper. Since only he knew about it, what could it hurt to have one soda? It was just his bad luck that a masked man with a gun came in to rob the place before he could make a decision.

One thing leads to another and the next thing he knows, he’s on his way to Billy Bacon’s place. Thieves struck again, though what there was left to take was a puzzle. Finding a dead guy in the barn just reinforced the idea that a day off wasn’t in the plan. book

The dead guy turns out to be Melvin, who lives nearby and who’s had things stolen from his place as well. It doesn’t make any sense—how did he get there? No truck or car tracks. He could have walked—nearby is relative in the country. Billy swears he doesn’t know anything, but Rhodes is sure he’s lying, about what is the question.

Joyce, Melvin’s now widow, tells Rhodes he can search their house for any clues as to why Melvin would have been at Billy’s in the first place, if Rhodes will let the dogs out for her and feed them too. When he and the dogs get back from a walk in the woods, Joyce’s brother-in-law, Will, is on hand to rescind the offer. He’s of a mind that the government is monitoring his phone calls, internet use, and more so a search without a warrant is just one more grievance.

Ruth, Rhodes’ deputy, is with him when they find a marijuana patch deep in the woods—guarded by an alligator. It’s not too unusual to find a patch here and there, but the alligator is a new touch.

Things are getting complicated. Usually the pieces come together, even if there’s a gap or two in the picture, but this time, with so many odds and ends and lies, the pieces aren’t cooperating fast enough to suit Rhodes. When a second body turns up, also on a seldom used farm, ‘complicated’ starts to look good in comparison.

This is the twenty-third Sheriff Dan Rhodes mystery. Crider also wrote the Professor Sally Good series, Professor Carl Burns mysteries, and the Truman Smith Private Eye series; all are cozy mysteries. His Westerns are hard-edged and gritty; his children’s books fun for all.

Reviewers special note:
These days, publishers do some promotion for new books, but a lot of the work falls on the authors themselves. Although he describes himself as a pretty boring guy, Bill Crider is known to be one of the nicest, most generous authors around. He’s just gotten some bad news, healthwise, and could use good thoughts, prayers, and support from his friends and fans. Survivors Will Be Shot Again is due to ship on August 9. Pre-orders would be a great visible sign of support. Reviews and word of mouth would be an enormous help. Post on Facebook, write about it on Goodreads, request that your library carry his books. Bill needs to focus all his energy and time to getting well. Let’s take care of promoting his latest good mystery for him. It’s a nice payback for all the good stories he’s told us.
