Professional psychic Abby Cooper has come a long way in proving her value to local enforcement. In fact, she is now an official consultant to the Austin’s Cold Case Division within the FBI, working alongside her husband and her best friend’s husband. Unfortunately, this has also led to Abby becoming a political pawn within the bureau, with her boss’s, her husband’s, and the Cold Case agents’ jobs all on the line. Abby is being “invited” to train FBI agents in Los Angeles on how to develop their intuition, despite their skepticism and hostile opposition. Now that her friends’ professional credibility and the lives of future victims are at risk, Abby has little choice but to face the sneering contempt of the LA FBI.book

Although Abby is forced to leave her protective husband Dutch Rivers behind, her best friend Candice Fusco defies orders to accompany Abby to LA. The Butch Cassidy to Abby’s Sundance, Candice always stands ready to provide support, comfort, and the occasional morally questionable physical force. Abby never doubts her “crew” or her visions, and the results are never more satisfying than when she stuns the LA agents with her accuracy. It rocks her to her core though, when an investigation into a series of bank robberies fails to lead her to what she is certain are the graves of four women. The discovery instead of 500 year-old Native American bones does little to calm her worries, nor does it gain her the confidence of the local FBI. Considering a childhood of being rejected by her parents and mocked for her abilities, being doubted instantly triggers Abby’s insecurities and fury. As a result, nothing, not even being sent back by the FBI to Austin, will prevent Abby from stopping the robberies, deciphering her vision, and figuring out how they are related.

By this fourteenth book of the Psychic Eye Mystery series, the extent and limitations of Abby’s psychic talent are firmly established. Her visions are shown as clues assisting the very practical detective investigations, and readers often have just as much information as Abby. In fact, the most questionable aspect of this entire novel may be the immediate effects of Abby’s enforced gluten-free diet and cross-fit regimen. Abby has established a very profitable professional psychic business with clients booked six months in advance, but it is her belief that the future is malleable and that people can change their destinies for the better that truly inspires Abby. Despite her successes and awe-inspiring abilities, Abby remains the underdog who struggles to prove herself. This allows Abby to be the relatable, engaging, somewhat snarky, and always entertaining heroine fans so adore. Surprising twists and a looming menace always waits in the background, but it is the friendship between Abby and Candice that is the gratifying heart of the novel.
