In 2020, we are profiling members of the Reedley Fire Department. This week we are interviewing Efrain Martinez who is a Captain with the Reedley Fire Department. Efrain grew up in Parlier but moved to Reedley in 2005. As a profession, he is a manufacturing engineer. He volunteers for the City of Reedley Fire Department.
KRL: When did you first know you wanted to be a firefighter and why?
Efrain: It was in the early 90s when I had a chance to join Mid Valley Fire Department and being that I always had a thing for helping the community it was a great opportunity to do so.
KRL: How long have you been one and how long with Reedley Fire Department?
Efrain: I’ve been involved in the fire side for about 30 years all together. I’ve been with The City of Reedley for about 13 years. My involvement with the fire department started with Mid Valley Fire, which is now Cal Fire.
KRL: What kind of training did you go through?
Efrain: I went through the Mid Valley Fire Academy.
KRL: What do you like best about being a firefighter?
Efrain: Everything we do is a challenge to do–the fact that not every incident is the same.
KRL: What is the hardest?
Efrain: For myself the hardest part of the job is when there is kids involved. That always gets me.
KRL: What is a typical day like for you on the job?
Efrain: Typical day is waiting for the unexpected.
KRL: Is there one special moment you would like to share?
Efrain: A special moment would be when incidents are terminated and we all come back save.
KRL: Do you have any hobbies?
Efrain: I enjoy spending time with the family, camping, hunting, and the outdoors.
Efrain: I am married with two kids. Our daughter is in the Army and our son is in high school.
KRL: Future plans/goals?
Efrain: I enjoy working in the RFD and helping the community.
