Murder Marks the Page is book one in Karen Rose Smith’s new Tomes & Tea Mysteries, which is a spin-off from the Daisy’s Tea Garden Mysteries.

Daisy’s daughter Jazzi Swanson has opened her own book and tea shop (Tomes & Tea) with her best friend Dawn Fernsby. Located in the small, lakeside resort town of Belltower Landing, New York, the shop offers flavored teas and a wide variety of literature. Jazzi and Dawn, along with the faithful members of their bookclub, are busy brainstorming ways to increase traffic to the store during the off-season.

Jazzi and Dawn befriend a local woman named Brie who has recently made contact with her biological father. Both Jazzi and Dawn are adopted and are happy to support Brie, especially as Brie’s wealthy father’s wife and children see her as a threat. Brie also shares with Jazzi about her many dating attempts using an app. Not long into the story, though, Brie is found murdered. Jazzi and Dawn are devastated and Jazzi, frustrated by the local police, begins to sleuth on her own. The list of possible suspects is long!

I love a good spinoff of a well-loved series, and this did not disappoint. It’s fun to hear stories told from new perspectives and to hear about Daisy through Jazzi’s point of view.

Jazzi is a determined character. At first she doesn’t want to get involved in the investigation because she’s seen her mother go through several, but she can’t just sit back while she thinks the detective is moving in the wrong direction. She is an observant sleuth, and even when frightened, she continues to push forward. This first entry into the new series does a great job of setting up the town and the characters and allowing readers to get situated, while also solving a solid, well-paced mystery. I am looking forward to reading more and do wish I could visit Tomes & Tea in person. This entry also includes recipes.
