One of the most rewarding parts of working in rescue is watching a cat transform from being scared to becoming friendly and trusting. I shall tell you about one very special cat I have worked with while volunteering at Feral Paws Rescue.

Four years ago Feral Paws Rescue saved the life of an orange cat who was taken off the streets of downtown Los Angeles and put into the North Central shelter. He apparently never had a home and was suffering from a upper respiratory infection and had lost the sight in one eye. His only chance at life was if a rescue pulled him. Feral Paws brought him to their main rescue and let him assimilate with the other cats who roam around, as he could not be touched or held. He was named Angelo.

Angelo

Several months ago while I was volunteering at the rescue, feeding the cats who are in an enclosed area near where Angelo hangs out, he began coming up to me when he saw me bring food. So I put a special dish of dry food out for him, and some of his friends would also come over. Over time he allowed me to touch and pet him on the head. This month while on one of my visits I noticed his eyes and nose were runny, so Paula and I were able to get him into a carrier and then into an enclosed area where he has a bed, litter pan, his favorite food dish that I’d taken for him, and where he can be given medication for his symptoms.

It feels like such an accomplishment to gain Angelo’s trust, not have him be afraid of us, and make himself comfortable inside where he’s safe. This is only part of what Feral Paws Rescue does every day: saving lives and making those who are afraid trust those who care for them.feral paws
