Prof. Hawking, a twelve-year-old Cairn, is very aptly named as Dawn, his foster mom, says he is very smart.
The Professor was turned in to Col. Potter Cairn Rescue by his owner due to alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea. Once the knowledgeable rescue volunteers began to work with the Professor, it became clear that his problems with controlling his poop were due largely to stress. Apparently, when he had accidents, he would be punished, and that would increase his stress and lead to more accidents. As a result, he shows fear of being punished.

Dawn says that he may have a thyroid problem due to being tubby and losing his hair. Being put on steroid meds has helped and also putting him on a regular schedule of going out every three to four hours has helped in getting control of his poop. “Now we go out, we play a little, and he does his business,” says Dawn. “This has definitely helped in controlling his bowels.”
This cute, little twelve-year-old boy is now more relaxed; a calm and thoughtful boy who doesn’t bark a lot. He is also running and playing with his favorite toy, a tennis ball. He gets along with Dawn’s four collies and ignores her cat.
In addition to his thyroid problems, the Professor has had dental work and two benign lumps removed. He seems to prefer women over men, and he is good with children.
Prof Hawking loves his walks and is good on his leash with no pulling. He doesn’t react to bunnies, but he struts around the neighborhood as if he is in control. At meal time prepare to be entertained as he often does a little jig for his food.
The Professor would like a home with a fenced in yard and a mom to love him. He needs someone who will understand that he is shy at first and needs reassurance to feel secure and confident. Professor Hawking will do well in a home with another dog and perhaps even a cat. He has only been with Dawn about six weeks and has made great progress, showing he will be a great companion in the right home. As Dawn says, “It’s all coming together for this sweet senior boy.”

Yes, he DESERVES a great and LOVING home, with a “mom”. How sad that the previous ‘owner/s’ had so little patience with him. He’s reached the age of 12 — quite an accomplishment — Best of luck, dear Professor !
