Looking for something different and exciting for the kids to do this summer? Check out the Discovery Summer Camp, presented by the Discovery Center in Fresno. I sat down with the Executive Director of the Discovery Center in Fresno, Lori Hunter, to find out more about this unique summer camp!

KRL: Can you give us a brief description of what the Discovery Center is?

LH: The Discovery Center is a community-based educational history and science center, offering the children and citizens hands-on learning experiences to stimulate passion, curiosity, and wonder for the sciences and our environment. Science truly is for everyone.

KRL: What is Creative Minds: Discovery Summer Camp 2019?

LH: Discovery Center provides a welcoming, fun space where we are hosting a challenging six full weeks of camp experiences, varying in theme every week. Themes include: animals, science, space, dinosaurs, the great outdoors, and—NEW—a week devoted to growth mindset specifically for kids ages 7-12!

KRL: What will the kids be doing at this camp?

LH: Creative Minds: Discovery Summer Camp 2019 has a full range of hands-on learning and activities, providing a full day camp experience from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

KRL: Can you tell us a little more about what ages are able to attend?

LH: Creative Minds Camp will be running two tracks this year, one for 3-5 years (need to be potty-trained to attend), and also a track for 6-11 years. Our sixth week of camp, Growth Mindset, is brand new this year, and lends a focus on learning through challenges and goal-setting, and has been created specifically for 7-12 year-olds, so that’s the only week where the age differs from the other weeks of camp.

KRL: What created the idea for this new camp option?

LH: The difference between a fixed-mindset and a growth-mindset can impact the life of a child tremendously, especially in regards to education. Through goal-setting and imparting an ability to recognize challenges, this program can help kids creatively embrace new ideas of how to meet those challenges. Climbing Mountains: Growth Mindset, has been specifically cultivated for kids ages 7-12, that will focus on helping children learn to embrace challenges, to persevere, and grow, through feedback.

KRL: Why do you feel this new camp option is important?

LH: The Growth Mindset week of camp is definitely something that lends a strong hand to testing scientific theory, and we want to let kids explore that concept in every way, as it will lead to improving life skills such as critical thinking as they move forward.

KRL: Where do the camps take place?

LH: Our summer camp program will be held at the Fresno Discovery Center, located in the Airport District of Fresno, at 1944 N. Winery Ave, Fresno CA 93703.

KRL: How long is the camp?

LH: Each camp is five days, Monday through Friday.

KRL: When does the camp take place?

LH: Summer Camp will be kicking off on Monday, June 24.

KRL: When is the deadline to sign up, and how do they sign up?

LH: Anyone interested can head to our website at FresnoDiscoveryCenter.org, where there is a direct link to information on our main home page; or they can call (559) 251-5533 during our regular business hours, 9 a.m. -1 p.m,, Mon-Fri.

KRL: Anything you would like to add?

LH: The Creative Minds Discovery Summer Camp truly is a different kind of experience that the kids will love from beginning to end, and will hopefully spark that flame of curiosity that burns so brightly in so many of us.science camp
