Five Cold Cases Closed…and Counting!

Jillian Hanford helps her half brother Garrett manage the Turtle Cove Resort, a writers’ retreat on Gull Island. There eight writers of varying ages, fame, and focus have taken up permanent residence. They have also banded together as the Mystery Mastermind Group where any one of them can bring up for consideration a cold case of personal or professional interest. The cases, cold by a few months to several decades, have ranged from murder to accidents to, now, a missing person. The details are discussed, and if they all agree to take on the investigation, individual responsibilities are assigned according to each other’s strengths. Joining in, the group relies on the local deputy and various quirky residents including Blackbeard the parrot. Although often not without personal jeopardy, several cold cases have been “closed.”

This new case has been brought to the group’s attention by Nicole Carrington. She had moved in a few months ago as a temporary resident with no interest in joining the group either professionally or socially. She explained her purpose for being on the island was to do some research for a book she was writing and just wanted privacy. However, by observing the other residents, she has determined they all might just be trustworthy enough to open up to…besides she’s desperate.

Sixth Cabin earns 4/5 Suspicious Selfies…Engaging Fun!

Nicole Carrington had a difficult childhood having been put into foster care at age twelve, and although she believed once her mother got her act together she would be reunited, three foster homes later and the news her mother had remarried and had another child, she figured that boat had sailed. Later, however, at her grandmother’s, she connects with her half-sister discovering she herself may have had the better life. Sixteen-year-old Emily Halliwell leaves her troubled home life behind, runs away with her boyfriend, but agrees to keep in touch with Nicole every week by emailing a selfie. Everything was fine for a couple of months until nine months ago when the selfies stopped coming. Using the last selfie, Nicole’s search for Emily has led her to Gull Island and the resort. That’s intriguing enough to get everyone on board. Where’s Emily is the new case for the Mystery Mastermind Group…sixth cabin mystery book cover

Kathi Daley has once again penned an intriguing mystery for this fan to follow. The Writers’ Retreat series is different in that the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “how” are often not in question; it is the “why” that sends the Group seeking answers. This new journey unfolds with the “who,” but as a missing person, nothing else is known. Emily’s selfies take us on an engaging investigation retracing her steps, talking to people who remember running into her, and twists, turns, and even some danger. Although descriptions offer the mental pictures for readers to form, Kathi doesn’t rely solely on the narrative, but also on the informal and formal conversations to piece together the missing girl’s journey as well as insights into our Gull Island residents. References to previous investigations do not give “spoilers,” and in the beginning, a bio for each main or visiting character provides background and connections. Characters and relationships are well established, but newbies can easily join in with Sixth Cabin. However, do not forget the rest of the series. It is intriguing and entertaining often with an “Oh my!” ending that makes it truly satisfying.
