Thanks to my publisher, Penguin, I am fortunate enough to be part of the Read Humane event along with five other mass market paperback authors. All of us write stories involving animals and we take great pride in that. We believe they indeed live up to the “Read Humane” initiative. Animals are treated with dignity and respect between the covers of our books.

What exactly is “Read Humane” all about? May is “Pet Month” and this campaign is a way for Penguin, authors and the public to support the Animal Rescue Team. This arm of the Humane Society funnels help, with the assistance of law enforcement, to the most abused and neglected animals. A large cash donation from Penguin goes to help the most severely mistreated pets that the Humane Society targets.

The books themselves, by myself (Leann Sweeney), Miranda James, Judi McCoy (who unfortunately passed away last year), Linda O. Johnson, Ali Brandon and Jill Shalvis, all have titles bearing the pink “Read Humane” sticker and are available at special kiosks across the country. The entire list of participating merchants can be found at: http://www.us.penguingroup.com/static/packages/us/readhumane/

There is also a “donate” button available on that site to raise even more money to help this worthy cause. Go there! Do that! Help an animal in need today!

And if you want to follow the event on Twitter, use this hashtag: #ReadHumane. You can also read more in USA Today‘s article.

Pick up one of these books and support the fight against animal cruelty. I know I speak for all the other authors involved when I say this is something we are so proud of!

Watch for a review of Leann’s new book and several other Read Humane books here in KRL sometime this month and you can read a review of Hounds Abound by Linda O. Johnston here now!.

Leann Sweeney is the author of the Cats in Trouble Mysteries, featuring cat quilter Jillian Hart, who settled in the small town of Mercy, South Carolina with her three cats. The fifth and latest book in the series, The Cat, The Mill and the Murder, will be released May 7.
