I’ve written a number of reviews about Jane Yellowrock, the shapeshifting skinwalker and vampire hunter created by Faith Hunter. There’s a reason for that. Faith Hunter keeps writing these things and I keep reading them! And now…there’s another one: Shadow Rites.
A painful tingling alerts Jane to trouble, a magical scanning of her home by a pair of unknown witches. When she’s about to have witchly guests staying with her for a peace confab with the local vampires and she’s preparing for a New Orleans visit from ruling European bloodsuckers, it’s trouble she doesn’t need. In the bayou, a long-missing vampire is found trapped, and getting her safe and back to normal (for a vampire) isn’t easy. Jane’s houseguests are her pregnant BFF Molly and family, including Angie, a little girl already showing the amazing powers of a double-bloodline witch. She also houses a werewolf stuck in four-footed mode and has been “gifted” with a once-powerful vampire who is now looked down upon by others. With all this going on, her relationship with George (a.k.a. “Bruiser”), a one-time bodyguard/companion/bloodbond of the vampire-Master of the City, is at an interesting stage. Throw in her security-company employees (ex-Ranger Eli and his super-hacker brother Alex) and the contract to Leo, the MOC, and there is barely room for the mountain lion who shares Jane’s soul. Believe it or not, Hunter manages to keep this whole crazy clockwork running smoothly without losing a nanosecond.
While Jane is jumping in and out of time, tearing apart her insides with every leap, the rogue witches are building a powerful revenge that might wipe out a large part of the supernatural community. The battle sequences defy physics and most play-by-play announcers. The chapter titles jump out of the text where you least expect them and shout “Gotcha!” Jane and Company have conversations that raise the snark bar to unattainable levels. Hunter’s gift for plotting has guided her to this tenth Jane Yellowrock novel (along with three short-story collections) with strength and precision. When publishers are dumping authors left and right, this urban fantasy series keeps going like an Energizer Bunny with plutonium power.

I finished this book last weekend, and as usual, enjoyed a Yellowrock and friends read. It was a library book so I’d still like my name in the draw.

I have loved these books since the first one I read years ago (when it came out). I just recently finished the newest short-story collection and relived how much I enjoyed them.
