Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Valley, Laton is a small rural town with a big dream—one that’s becoming a reality through Laton Arts Central CA. This nonprofit ensures that everyone, no matter their background, has a chance to experience the arts in a place where opportunities like this have been hard to come by.
A Vision for Change
Laton Arts Central CA started as a school program but quickly grew into something bigger. After three years, it became a nonprofit dedicated to bringing high-quality theatre and Folklorico dance programs to the community. Officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) in October 2024, the organization was born out of a passion for cultural expression and the need for more accessible arts programming in rural areas like Laton.
The Laton Arts Central CA board saw the need for accessible arts programming in rural areas. Recognizing the gap in opportunities, we were driven by a shared passion for cultural expression and the importance of providing a space where the community could engage in the arts without barriers.
Empowering the Community Through the Arts
Laton Arts Central CA offers a variety of programs, from Folklorico dance classes that celebrate Latino heritage to acting workshops that help build confidence and creativity. The organization not only nurtures artistic talent but also provides leadership opportunities for high school students, giving them the chance to earn community-service hours or even to be paid as assistant instructors.
More than just skill-building, these programs create a sense of pride and connection in a town where cultural resources have been limited. Many families struggle financially, making extracurricular activities hard to afford. Laton Arts Central CA works to eliminate these barriers by offering scholarships and financial aid to ensure that no student is turned away due to cost.

“These experiences left me with memories I’ll hold onto forever, but even more than that, they gave me life skills that will stay with me. I’m not the shy kid I used to be. I have the confidence now to take on whatever comes my way.” – Brandon, 15
Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Opportunities
As a grassroots organization, Laton Arts Central CA has faced its share of challenges, from securing funding to finding enough space for classes and performances. Right now, the organization is using various locations in Laton for rehearsals and events while working toward a more permanent home.
Looking ahead, the organization hopes to expand its offerings to include ballet and hip-hop classes, purchase a vehicle for transportation, and eventually establish a dedicated arts space in Laton. With strong community support and a clear vision, the future of Laton Arts Central CA is bright.
