Nailed: A Resort to Murder series by Avery Daniels
Review by Kathleen Costa

Resort to Murder
Avery Daniels first published her Resort to Murder series in May 2017 with Iced, a marvelous personal favorite. Fans are introduced to Julienne LaMere as an event coordinator and manager-in-training at an upscale resort in Colorado. With a plethora of rich characters to support her amateur investigations, not-so-smooth romantic entanglements, and some perilous moments, Julienne is proving to be a favorite cozy character.

nailed book coverJulienne is taking her job seriously, so when circumstances change and instead of her boss she is sent to a resort management conference in Vail, Colorado, she is very eager to sharpen her managerial skills, network with like-minded people, and take lots of notes on how a posh premier resort operates, but investigating a murder was not on the conference schedule. With her BFF Porsche in tow, the two are eager to start their working vacation with a nice dinner in one of the resort’s restaurant. Their lovely evening along with that of an ex-husband and his girlfriend and a former client, his wife, and son is interrupted. Kara Caine, realtor extraordinaire, comes in grabbing forcefully everyone’s attention. No one seems pleased. And the next morning when she is found dead in the snow, Julienne gets roped into the investigation. Ok, maybe roped is not accurate. The lead detective makes her an unofficial official confidential informant/consultant recognizing she has a knack and needs her to uncover the truth amidst the gossip, the innuendo, and the evasion.

Once again, I was totally engaged in Avery Daniels’ clever mystery. Her description of the environment, the people, and the very inclement weather brought to life the resort and the town making me a bit claustrophobic with all the talk of the snow storm, roads closed, everyone stay indoors. But she didn’t rely on just the narrative including entertaining banter between Julienne and her BFF Porsche and the informal interrogations with other witnesses and suspects.

The essence of a “page turner” with a plethora of rich characters to support her amateur investigation, not-so-smooth romantic entanglements, and some perilous moments. Julienne is proving to be a favorite cozy character: vulnerable, but strong, although she need to make up her mind to give her heart to someone or not. Fans of Avery’s book one Iced will be thrilled, and newbies need not shy away since enough information is provided, no spoilers, on background and character connections to make it easy to join in. Although there are subtle nuances and some personal events that you may want to experience by reading book one first. But however you join in, my recommendation is to “join in.”

Earth Day
By Avery Daniels

With Earth Day celebrations all over the world, what do you do to support conservation?

I am fortunate to have easy recycling available at my home and in the past was able to provide suggestions to my employer for recycling and eco-friendly changes in everyday operations which many were instituted.

I joined the local Sierra Club more recently after they advised the city to close an old and inefficient coal burning electric plant rather than spend money on band-aid attempts to update when the other electric plants could handle the distributed load. I have taken part in a trail building event for a public trail in a public wilderness area.

I look forward to basing a future novel in one of the forward thinking eco-friendly resorts that exist around the world. These eco-friendly resorts, like Travel Channel’s Belize and Montana or the really cool Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, Vanu Levu, Fiji Islands, are some I find fascinating.

  3. That cover is so beautiful, I just added this series to my TBR list, even before I knew what it was about! The things I do for conservation is to turn off or unplug electronics and lights when not in use, turning off the faucet when I’m not actually using the water, and getting better at remembering my reusable shopping bags when I go to the store. Nothing big, but the small things do add up! Thanks for the review and the giveaway!
