Like most of you, I am practicing social distancing from my home. For me this is not too far out of the ordinary. As a writer, I have been predominantly work at home for most of my career, but I do enjoy getting out every once in a while and seeing the world. I wanted to share some tidbits from my three plus week homestay.

1. Without the Internet and social media, I would have no idea what is going on in the real world. Almost two years ago, my husband and I moved to an area in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains known as the Dark Corner. Not even Jimmy John’s or Pizza Hut deliver here. Dark Corner as it was once home to deserters in the revolution and moonshiners in more recent history.

2. I don’t have to search for toilet paper as I have always hoarded it. Was this foresight? No, it was actually based on past experience. As a poor college student, my roommates and I once ran out, so I vowed that would never happen again. I wish I had the foresight to stock up on hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes.

3. Without the distraction of traveling to work out or shop, I can read a great deal more. Since our quarantine started almost three weeks ago, I have found the time to read twelve books. Some of my favorite reads include The Book of Essie, Becoming Mrs. Lewis, and The Herd. I also discovered that I have stockpiled books on my to-be-read pile and have spent time trying to determine how long I can last if I cannot obtain new books. As I spend considerable amount of time staring at a computer screen, I prefer to read physical books

4. Staying connected is extremely important. I’ve attended a virtual book club to discuss Dear Edward, one of my favorite recent reads, a virtual cocktail hour and virtual workouts with my local Jazzercise club. It has been great to see familiar faces and have some routine in these uncertain times.

5. After the first two weeks of not feeling creative, I was able to dive in and start a new story. I don’t know where it’s going yet, but at least I am writing and feel much more productive.

I have not found time to clean my overstuffed closet or weed the nonstop mustard seed taking root in my backyard, but there’s still time. I think the social distancing will be prolonged for awhile.

I have spent some time promoting my most recent cozy mystery, A White Rabbit’s Tale, the sixth book in the Antique Hunters Mystery series. This particular story leads my characters into a years-old mystery relating to the 1893 Chicago Exposition. It was a fun story to research and equally as fun to write.
