Could you imagine going through the COVID-19 pandemic fifty years ago? Twenty years ago? How about ten years ago? Our ways of communication has greatly increased in just the last ten years. FaceTime went live June 7, 2010. We’ve all seen the commercials and the pictures of people, mainly kids, on their various handheld techno gadgets and rolled our eyes. How many times have you said, or wanted to say, “get off your phone and go outside!”

We’ve taken the FaceTime reading sessions a step further. There’s a chance my son’s family and my daughter’s family have been exposed through different sources so we’re not taking any chances. We’re all self-quarantined a couple miles apart. We’ve started daily catch-up sessions to stay connected. The grandkids still think the school “vacation” is kind of fun so they’re excited to tell me about their assignments. It’s comforting to see their smiling faces and know they’re fine. Check back in a few weeks and we’ll see if the excitement is sustainable.

Another aspect of technology I’ve embraced is the Zoom meeting. Several times a month, I usually meet for coffee and some in depth writing time with fellow authors. We’d meet at the local coffee shop and over copious amounts of coffee talk plots, characters, and all things writing. Well, since the coffee shop is closed because of the virus, we were feeling the isolation of social distancing. So, we zoomed a virtual coffee meet-up. We spent over an hour laughing, chatting, and crying on one another’s shoulder about writing, our families, and this virus. We each had our own cup of coffee in our own private spaces, together.

Technology has kept me connected and I’m thankful for it. Especially right now. I’m also embracing ebooks. I’ve always had a full Kindle but many authors and publishers are putting lots of books on sale right now. I’m buying daily.
