After Sydney’s engagement imploded, she quit her job and went back home to help her sister, Cat, run the local animal shelter. Donations are down so a little PR work can surely keep the doors open. With the help of the bakery owner, a pop up cat café is scheduled. Those who want to grab and run can still get coffee and a pastry to go; those who want a more relaxed start to the day can get their drinks and food and go into the designated cat room. Cats, of course, have their own treats. It’s a win/win, except for one man, Trowbridge Littleton, who seemingly objects to anything and everything anyone wants to do. In fact, he’d like to see the shelter closed entirely.
Cat can usually, well, most of the time, control her temper. When homeless cats and dogs are concerned, not so much. When the sisters drop by to have a saner discussion with Littleton at his art gallery the next morning, it’s more than upsetting and a bit of a relief to find his dead body. 
In the meantime, Sydney has been adopted by Toby, the wandering cat. He knows how to unlatch his crate door and find a way out of the shelter and be gone for a day or two at a time. He also manages to spurn all potential adopters, until he meets Sydney.
Littleton owned much of the town and had just issued letters saying rents would be increased at the end of the year—by 30%! It would be enough to put most businesses under and to jeopardize the remaining stores, especially the shelter. Littleton’s wife is of the trophy variety. She’s beautiful to see and expensive to maintain. No wonder he wants the increase.
Littleton and his wife had an open marriage. It’s hard to believe but some women found the man attractive, at least for a while. Rumors are flying about which women were involved and who’s the current one.
The mystery is well plotted with enough suspects to keep readers guessing. Could it be the widow who is more than she seems on the surface? A disgruntled artist or client? A store owner who sees his business going up in smoke?
Toby the cat helps where he can, adding to the storyline without ever intruding or distracting from the chase for the killer. Deer Park, North Carolina, is a place you’ll want to visit with plenty of people you’d want to meet. Just make sure the animal shelter is on the list too—plan on bringing home a new pet or two.
