Cleo Coyle’s Coffeehouse Mysteries are one of my favorite mystery series. Not only are the stories and characters interesting, but the coffeehouse atmosphere is heavenly! Each time I pick up one of these books I feel like I’m visiting friends at my favorite coffee shop. I couldn’t wait to pick up the latest book, No Roast For the Weary, and zoomed right through it.

Like many places these days, the Village Blend in New York is going through a slump and master roaster and manager Clare Cosi is worried that they may have to close—which would devastate her, her crew, and Madame, her former mother-in-law who owns the shop. Determined not to let this happen, Clare gathers her staff and they begin brainstorming for ideas to bring more people back into the shop. Her clever and creative crew (there are poets and actors among the baristas, so literally creative) quickly come up with the idea of making the top floor a Writer’s Block Lounge.

Madame isn’t as excited about the idea. There had been a writer’s lounge in the early days of the Village Blend that ended tragically with a murder that was never solved. But when one writer is attacked in the alley, and another is murdered, Clare feels there might be a connection to the murder in the past, and Madame is willing to help Clare uncover secrets from that first writer’s group that may provide answers to both murders. Could this all derail Clare’s efforts to save her beloved Village Blend? Clare’s fiancé Mike (who is also a police detective) helps her out with info and comfort when needed, and her barista Esther helps her investigate. Her ex and business partner, Matt, is less helpful this time out, instead his secret meetings with a competitor have Clare even more worried! Can they find out the truth in time to save the Village Blend and stop a killer?

The closing of the Village Blend would have devastated me as well, and this story not only had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know who was behind all of the murders, but also to know if my favorite coffee shop would be closing!

I love these books so much. The mysteries are always well done with plenty of twists and turns—never saw the ending of this one coming. The characters are interesting, complex, likeable, and real. The Village Blend is a place I always enjoy visiting, and Cleo’s descriptions of the food and coffee practically make me feel like I can smell them! And if that weren’t enough, there are recipes in the back that I can’t wait to try!

If you enjoy cozies, and especially if you enjoy a great mystery and a great cup of coffee, don’t miss No Roast For the Weary, or this series!

  4. Thank you so much, Lorie, for the beautiful review of our new (hard to believe 21st) Coffeehouse Mystery. Marc and I had a great time writing this one (especially because the murder mystery involves a community of quirky writers). We’re quirky ourselves, and we’ve been working writers for a few decades now, so we had plenty of fun with the story. We’re so glad to know you enjoyed it! And we have to add–

BIG CHEERS for all you do with this wonderful online magazine and especially for your longtime support of cozy mystery writers and readers. We can’t thank you enough for that. It’s always an honor to be included in your coverage. We hope everyone enjoys NO ROAST FOR THE WEARY, and that you’ll return again to Clare’s Village Blend.

    With love from NYC,
    Cleo

  168. I have all the kindle and audiobooks. My husband and I love listen to them when we are driving on road trips instead of the radio. I preorder every book and audiobook narrator you use is so perfect for these book. When you are listening to them on audiobook the narrator makes all the difference. My husband is not a reader but he will listen to book and you are his favorite.

  177. Like Lorie, I would be devastated if Village Blend closed. I settle on my patio with an iced coffee (I’m in FL, it needs ice!) and enter the world of Village Blend. Under my colorful umbrella, I enjoy the breeze and the adventure carries me off until the Mockingbird or Blue Jays decide I’ve had enough peace and descend to the patio to demand their unsalted roasted peanut ( yes, spoiled).

  191. Only discovered this series the past month. Finished all of them, then along came “No Roast For The Weary”. I’m addicted to audible and I love how the narrator interprets each character different. So much fun. I love all the characters and how real life is blended into the storyline… the results of the pandemic, how stress and lack of communication can affect a relationship. I especially love that Mike accepts Clare for who she is, inquisitive, perhaps a little nosy, and very often stubborn. This series just has to continue… we have to see them get married!

With the baristas I’ve come to know, and the variety of coffees I’ve now been bold enogh to try once or twice a week. The suspense in the stories, while maintaining excellent realism, is why I mark my calendars each time a new book comes out.
