Jodie, a miniature Schnauzer, had a rough start in life. She was isolated as a puppy and never socialized. This situation has led to a number of problems.

Jodie came in to Col. Potter in a lot of pain from a hip problem. She has had hip surgery and is now pain free. She is with one of Col. Potter’s very experienced foster moms, Deb. Jodie is terrified of humans, but enjoys playing with other dogs. Deb says she is learning dog behavior from her other four dogs.

Jodie

Deb has been working on socializing Jodie and has made some good progress. Now, Jodie has learned to enjoy belly rubs and sitting in Deb’s lap. She also sleeps in bed with Deb, but gets agitated when Deb gets up. Deb has taught Jodie to accept treats when she reaches out a hand holding a treat towards Jodie. Jodie barks when Deb gives attention to one of her other dogs, clearly asking for attention.

Jodie loves walks, but Deb double leashes her because she feels if Jodie got loose, it would be difficult to catch her. She has tried a variety of harnesses, but Jodie chews them and escapes quite quickly. Given this, Jodie would need a home with a securely fenced yard where she can enjoy running around with at least one other dog. Jodie enjoys Deb’s yard and loves stealing from her tomato garden.

Jodie, with Deb’s help, is learning to leave her unhappy, early life behind. However, there is more work to be done. Any potential adopter would need to enroll Jodie in an obedience class. They would also need a lot of patience with Jodie who, despite what she has been through, is a happy ray of sunshine.

Despite all the progress that Deb has made with Jodie, and this little girl’s upbeat personality, Deb is worried that Jodie will backslide if adopted. However, she has formed a special bond with one of Deb’s other fosters, Schatzie, also a miniature Schnauzer. If these two were adopted together, that might be Jodie’s best chance at settling into a forever home. If that doesn’t happen, Deb is prepared to keep Jodie. Turning five in April, Jodie should have a long, happy life ahead.
