Once a high-powered travel magazine editor, Plum Lockhart has re-emerged as a villa broker on the Caribbean paradise aptly called Paraiso. In Carrie Doyle’s second Trouble in Paradise mystery, Something’s Guava Give, she is talked into trying to get Arielle, a publishing heiress, out of trouble with resort security; the girl has a habit of picking up things that don’t belong to her. The next morning, Arielle is dead, and Gerald, one of Plum’s former magazine employees, wants her to investigate, which puts the broker in close proximity with the security chief, the yummy Juan Kevin Munoz.

The murder scene? The garish estate of Dieter Friedrich, acid-washed jeans tycoon. The clue search leads to a bar on an island in a pool where bathers swim with sharks, to a disco, and into a near-throne room where Dieter greets visitors. Next door is the villa of his rich, reclusive nemesis, who hates the noise of Dieter’s disco nights. Gerald shows up to “help” find justice for his boss’s slain daughter, but he spends most of his time drinking, dancing, eating, and working on his tan.

Plum also spends time trying to thread the line between two powerful women on the island, the ex- and second wives of a major family. Each can make her business prosperous…or ruin her. A diminutive host of a game show and his not-that-funny comedienne wife, Arielle’s mousy pal with a gorgeous boyfriend, a famous rock star with hints of a dicey reputation, and a possibly corrupt police chief who jumps to wrong conclusions variously aid and confuse the investigation.

Did Arielle “find/pick up/steal” something that put her life in jeopardy? Can Plum keep her business above water when the tide comes in? Is Juan Kevin available or not? Will Plum shed her NYC attitudes and adopt the Paraisan style that takes things slowly…and will she ever get her own car and ditch the underpowered golf cart in which she trundles around the resort?

Doyle’s previous book series mined the Hamptons for romance and mystery. The Caribbean is yielding gold for her, and there is more to come.
