Details on how to win a copy of Dead Heat at the end of this review along with a link to purchase the book where a portion goes to help support KRL and indie bookstore Mysterious Galaxy.

Dead Heat is the newest fantasy novel by Patricia Briggs. After a three-year wait, we get to return to the Alpha and Omega series (part of the Mercy Thompson world, a world with werewolves, fae, and vampires). The Alpha and Omega series features werewolves Charles and Anna. I really like how Charles sees himself as an older wolf given this gift of Anna, an Omega wolf, which gives him peace. I like how Anna, even though she is younger, has been through tough times and values Charles. She sees him as a protector. But she wants to protect Charles too, even from part of herself.book

In Dead Heat Charles wants to give Anna a special gift for her birthday. He put a post-it note on his computer to remind him. And then he gets a call from an old friend, Joseph. Charles is around 200 years old and doesn’t have too many friends; this is one person he got close to, but Joseph has gotten old and is nearing the end of his life.

The call gives Charles the idea to give Anna a horse. So Charles and Anna go to Scottsdale, Arizona to see some horses at the annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. But they arrive just as the fae have loosed a monster whose favorite prey is children—and he went after the grandchildren of the local Alpha. So the werewolves are going on a hunt for this fae. But the police and FBI want in on the hunt as well, as a local girl was stolen and replaced with a changeling.

Charles also needs to face the fact that Joseph is dying—and Charles doesn’t want him to leave. Charles has offered to change him into a werewolf, but Joseph is unwilling to go through it.

This is a wonderful book that has great depth to it. This whole series is excellent and the only problem I have with it is the wait between books!

  11. I am a fan of all of Mz Briggs books but I am particularly fond of Charles and Anna. I love how she can charm him out of seriousness and their interaction. I also love how Anna’s character has grown into her own strength.
