Mari, of a wandering clan, can turn feline. She wants revenge on the man who unleashed ghosts that killed her family and kinfolk. He is known as the Dead’s Man.

Tris was born dead, but lived. Now, he can battle and banish ghosts. He is known as the Dead’s Man.

Tris and Mari were made for each other.

The Dead Seekers is the first book in a new series by Barb and J.C. Hendee, authors of the fourteen-part Noble Dead Saga. Barb also pens the Mist-Torn Witches series. They all exist in the same world. The Noble Dead dealt with vampires and elves, the Mist-Torn sisters of a Gypsy-like heritage could read the past and the future, and Tris and Mari are like a paranormal Batman and Robin fighting spirits and an other-dimensional Joker.

Mari wants to kill Tris for what he did to her people, but she has doubts. He doesn’t act like a villain. He tries to help people banish ghosts, not harness them to kill. She tags along as his apprentice and interpreter, looking for clues that will allow her to murder him. Tris travels to escape his noble family and find a way to defeat the evil creature he sees when he throws ghosts out of this universe.

I prefer the Mist-Torn series to the Noble Dead books, partly because of the older co-written series’ over-use of extended flashbacks. The Seekers do engage in flashbacks, but they are more controlled and purposeful. There isn’t a lot of world-building, because the world has already been built through two other sets of books. If you come from there, things will be very familiar. If this is all new to you, you might want to look for the other titles.

The Hendees offer tormented characters and put them into ghost-busting situations with other tormented characters. You’ll meet an alchemist in disguise who mentors the ghostcatcher, a mother who can’t let go (even beyond the grave), and a kingdom with a refugee problem. The world may be pre-fab, but the problems fit the society. Happy hunting, and may the ghost not be your own.
