Lily Barlow’s heroine is Janet Evanovich’s character, Stephanie Plum. Unfortunately, she lives in boring Marshall, Virginia. She is between semesters at college, and she is at home to find a manager for her family’s bakery, which has closed following her father’s heart attack. She can’t wait to get back to school, but business comes first. No bakery, no tuition! She has taken a short term apartment rental from a family friend who may or may not be burying bodies in her back yard, while raising attack chickens for the fresh eggs. As she does interviews for the bakery, she surfs the web for information on dough and runs across a site where the police are looking for help in identifying murder victims with no identification. Lily soon gets ensnared into a body with a tattoo that she recognizes. Having meet the tattoo wearer only once for a three-day period at a musical festival, she isn’t sure if she can find her again or prove that the body is hers, because she only knows a first name.
As Lily interviews candidates for the bakery manager’s job she gets more involved with the mystery of Jane Dough, whom she knows as Storie. In the meantime, Lily’s best friend, Jack, stuns her with the revelation that he wants to take their friendship to the next level! Not ready to commit to Jack, Lily delves deeper into the mystery of Jane Dough/Storie and finds ways to track down her movements and last name. Can Lily succeed while keeping Jack’s unwanted advances at bay? Finding the band that Lily associates with her meeting with Jane Dough/Storie at the musical festival, Lily goes to hear them play and question one of the players to see if she can find out Storie’s last name. The band member is no help, but Lily meets a woman in the audience and during their conversation, Lily finds out Storie’s last name and that she is a local girl. With Jack in tow, Lily sets out to find Storie’s family and tell them about her findings so that they can get closure.
Lily has to handle Jack’s advances, fend off the attack chicken, and figure out if her landlady is really burying bodies in the back yard. Can she handle all that and solve the mystery of Jane Dough/Storie?
This was an interesting mystery which came to a surprising ending. It was twisted together with Lily and Jack’s changing relationship without detracting from the mystery. The characters are well drawn and interesting. The small town setting was perfectly portrayed. This is a fun read for any mystery and/or romance fan.
