Hallmark’s newest mystery series is Crossword Mysteries: A Puzzle To Die For starring Lacey Chabert as Tess Harper and Brennan Elliott as NYPD Detective Logan O’Connor. Lacey is known for her work in television, movies and on Broadway and has appeared in seventeen Hallmark movies. Brennan Elliott is a Canadian actor who is best known for his role as Dr. Nick Biancavilla in Lifetime’s Strong Medicine. He has also appeared in several Hallmark movies and their series, Cedar Cove. Together Chabert and Elliot partnered in two Hallmark movies All of My Heart: Inn Love and the sequel All of My Heart: The Wedding.
When an art gallery theft ends in murder, Tess is pulled into working the investigation thru her aunt’s friendship with the dead gallery owner. Tess is the crossword puzzle editor at a newspaper, and she discovers that there are clues contained in puzzles submitted from one particular contributor that tell what gallery to rob, time, date, and picture to steal. As Logan, the detective in charge, learns quickly Tess is an intelligent woman who knows what she is talking about. Tess and Logan are soon working together to narrow down a long list of suspects. Was it the bitter ex-wife, a broker who got a stolen painting to sell, the odd new couple in the crossword puzzle world or someone else? As Tess hosts the annual crossword puzzle championship, the clues mount up quickly. Then the second murder of Tess’s newspaper colleague happens and things get really personal for both Tess and Logan as they get closer to discovering the murderer.
As a crossword puzzle person, I really enjoyed watching this well done new series premiere. All the familiar faces from other Hallmark movies make this a family reunion that is doubly enjoyable. The leading characters have a lot of chemistry together, and it shows. I found the robberies being set up thru a crossword puzzle really innovative. The robbery and murder plots were extremely well done and took you to a totally surprising ending. More episodes of this new series will be coming in October.
