When attorney Andy Carpenter doesn’t have a case in court, his investigative team gets restless. The team consists of Andy’s wife, Lorie, an ex-cop, Sam who is a computer genius, Marcus who is their muscle, Corey, also an ex-cop, and Simon Garfunkle who is Corey’s retired K-9 partner. They call themselves the K Team.

The police department has hired them to look into cold cases – cases that happened years ago, where there are no new clues, and no one was ever convicted of the crime. This time it’s personal.

Jimmy Dietrich was a mentor to a lot of newbie cops, including Corey. When Jimmy retired, he couldn’t stand being off the job. He tried to rejoin the force, but there are rules about that. He drank, split up with his wife (her idea), and tried but failed to be a civilian.

Then two bodies washed up from the Passaic River. One of them was Jimmy, the other Susan Avery. There’d been a case, the case being, Susan’s husband, accused postmortem of being a dirty cop. People thought Jimmy started seeing Susan after that and maybe Susan and Jimmy’s deaths were a murder-suicide, Jimmy being the killer. Corey never believed it.

The biggest problem with cold cases is, even after just a few years, memories fade, people move, die, or just want to forget the whole thing. When cops are involved, dirty or otherwise, that goes double.

This is book four in the spinoff series. Corey is still seeing Denise and is getting comfortable with that, not ready to bolt at the first sign of a relationship. That’s new for him. Simon Garfunkle is a delight as always. Marcus rarely says anything but is a force to be reckoned with — just ask any of the mobsters he’s encountered. Lorie keeps them all in line.
