Elayne Gonzalez is the founder of Mell’s Mutts, an animal rescue in Fresno, CA. They will be sharing their animal rescue stories with us each month.

Meet Atticus. This boy is so popular that he won first place in a local calendar contest, he has his own Instagram page, and he has a huge fan following! What makes the amazing boy stand out is not just his handsome smile, but Atticus had to have one of his legs amputated when he was only three weeks old. We believe his mom accidentally bit him which caused such major damage that in order to save his tiny little life, the leg had to be removed. So, Atticus is what the dog community calls, a tripawd. Please do not feel sorry for him, though, because let us tell you this guy doesn’t know any different. He runs and plays at full speed! Atticus is full of energy and will go, go, go, so he would really love and need to be in a very physically active home. He will probably not run a marathon, but he definitely needs daily walks and exercise. He has received very thorough professional training and has really learned great manners. Atticus loves other animals, but because he gets overly excited, he would do best in a home with either no other dog or one that will let him know who is boss in a calm cool manner.

Let Atticus tell you in his own words……

Hi all!!! My name is Atticus. Here’s a funny secret; my foster mom calls me ‘Dennis the Menace’. I’m not sure who that is, but every time she says it she giggles so I think it means I’m a funny guy….right?! Well my first birthday is coming up, it’s April 17 to be exact, and what an awesome birthday it would be if I get adopted and get to celebrate my big number “one” with a forever family.

Let me tell you I’ve had lots of obstacles to overcome this year, but I have come through it all like a champ, and I am so healthy and strong. Boy, I am super strong now to be honest. I love going for day walks and act like a perfect gentleman when I do. I don’t pull on the leash, in fact, I will walk right by your side and gaze into your eyes the whole time.
