The Rogue Festival hits Fresno again from February 28 – March 9, and you can expect a lot of coverage before & during Rogue from KRL this year–maybe even some videos this time! Here is another article about one of this year’s festival performers. You can learn more on the Festival website! You can find all our other Rogue articles in our A & E section.

Attention all you jazz lovers! If you’re any kind of swinger, you need to beat a path down to the 2013 Rogue Performance Festival show, Moonlight and Love Songs (Mostly). It’s chock full of hot jazz by Scats on The Sly, crazy vintage visuals and chocolate to boot!

The lion’s share of the songs in the quartet’s repertoire (which date from the 1920s & 30s) are about those oldest subjects in the world: love, romance, and all of the crazy stuff that goes along with it. And while some of those songs are sweet odes to the joys of romance, those that deal with the flipside of the coin of love can get downright snarky. The cats in the Scats got to thinking that it was time to illustrate and celebrate those elements in a show.
Originally, the plan was to team up with dancers from a local swing dance group and put on a song and dance show. As it happened, the dance group was unable to commit to all the Rogue Festival dates, seemingly throwing a spanner in the works. At that point, Scat’s singer Mallory Moad dug down deep into her bag of tricks and conjured up a whole new concept for the show. Vintage visuals and costumes will now pair up with the music to illustrate the good, the bad, and the ugly of love in all its maddening glory.

An award-winning member of the Fresno art scene, Moad brings her years of experience as a performance artist into play in the multimedia production of Moonlight and Love Songs (Mostly). A fixture of the Rogue Festival since its beginning, her performances are always a must-see, serving up a glorious stew of visuals, music, humor, and some profound truths to boot.

Scats on The Sly are Mallory Moad, vocals; Martin Hansen, bass; Sue Beevers, violin; and Mike Newton, guitar. Together, they have more than 15 years of performing experience
