Here at KRL we love featuring businesses in the Tower District. This week we are chatting with the owner of Frosted Cakery, Beverly Gable, who opened the bakery with her daughter Megan.

Beverly and Megan when they first opened Frosted Cakery

KRL: What was your background before that in the world of food?

Beverly: I grew up in a bakery family! My parents had Jimmie’s Bakery and I started washing dishes and went up through the business. I learned each area of the baking business and ended up in the custom cakes. I always said I was trained in the school of my mother Jimmie! I also took classes to learn and grow my craft.

KRL: When did you open Frosted Cakery and how did you come up with the name?

Beverly: We opened Frosted Cakery in 2009 in the Tower District location. We opened with custom cakes but soon added cupcakes as the cupcake turned into a popular item. We added many other desserts as well, since dessert table options became popular. We always wanted to be focused on our original goal of “anything frosted” and decided on the name Frosted Cakery and our tagline “dreams in buttercream.”

During the time we were planning on our business we met with family and friends and discussed ideas and dreams of what the business would look like, to really focus on making and creating a beautiful and delicious confection for our customers. We came up with our acronym for Frosted, F-fun and fabulous, R-respectful, O-outstanding, S-sweet, T-tasteful, E-elegant, D-dedicated. We have this on the wall to remind our Frosted team who we strive to be.

KRL: I see you also have another location—which came first, the one in the Tower District or the other one?

Frosted Cakery’s very popular Strawberry Pizza

Beverly: We opened the Tower location in 2009 and the Bullard and West location in 2021. Both locations sell the same products, and each week have the same menu. Even though the shops are only 15 minutes apart, it is as if they are in 2 different cities. Each location has different popular items and flavors. We also sell a limited selection of our cupcakes at Chocolate Wishes in Sierra Vista Mall, Clovis.

KRL: Why did you choose a location in the Tower District?

Inside Frosted Cakery

Beverly: When looking for a location for our cake shop, we knew we wanted to find a place already a food facility and found a vacant bakery. Also, since I grew up in the Fresno High district it was like home to me. I grew up going to the businesses in the Tower.

KRL: What do you sell?

Beverly: We sell cakes, cupcakes, cookies, strawberry pizzas, pies and fabulous desserts tables for weddings and events. We are well known for our wedding cakes and desserts, birthday, anniversaries and anything that needs a sweet touch! Just like Julia Child said: “A party without a cake is really just a meeting.”

KRL: What do you feel makes your bakery unique?

Beverly: We are a three-generation bakery family with a love for creating great desserts for our customers. We have so many long-term customers who come to us for their weddings, and have returned for anniversaries, births, birthdays and all celebrations. I feel it is a great honor to be a part of so many important life celebrations!

KRL: What is your favorite treat at the bakery?

Beverly: It’s really hard to say what my favorite item is, they all are like my family! Lol. When pressed to answer this question I usually say, “All of them, but I almost can’t turn down a slice of the Salted Caramel cake”

KRL: What are your goals for the future?

Beverly: We love what we are doing now and researching for current cake trends and flavors. We do have some exciting opportunities on the horizon and are looking forward to sharing this in the coming year.

KRL: Anything else you would like to add?

Beverly: I appreciate sharing with you and your readers our history, hopes and “dreams in buttercream” in your publication.
