Mission Impawsible: A Paws & Claws Mystery by Krista Davis
Review by Cynthia Chow

Holly Miller is spending her first summer since childhood in Wagtail, Virginia, where she has taken up her grandmother Oma’s offer to become a partner in the Sugar Maple Inn. Now that the resort town has rebranded itself as a pet-centric and very pet-loving tourist destination, they are hosting Wagtail’s first Animal Attraction matchmaking event. Singles who have been luckier finding love with pets will be bringing them along to hopefully increase the chances of meeting the perfect (human) partner. Oma has even hired a professional celebrity matchmaker to help out with the event, paving the way through pet-focused surveys and apps. Wagtail’s unique twist is that if a couple’s pets get along, perhaps their owners will as well.book

The town and Sugar Maple Inn quickly fill up with the lovelorn, including Holly’s ex-boyfriend Ben Hathaway. Despite his former distain for dogs, Ben now seems willing to adopt, although perhaps he did not expect a challenging German shepherd mix. As much as Holly declares to be a non-participant in the matchmaking events, she can’t help but notice John Adele and his adorable Labrador Cooper. A series of miscommunications and accusations seem destined to keep them apart, but that’s nothing compared to an uninvited doomsayer of love, a psychiatrist who believes in neither true love nor affection from pets. His presence at Animal Attraction casts a dark cloud until Holly and her Jack Russell terrier Trixie once again encounter murder.

Love is the theme of this relentlessly entertaining mystery, the fourth in the Paws & Claws Mystery series that focuses on the complete appreciation of pets by their humans. The assigned romances have their ups and downs, with the humans doing all they can to sabotage themselves and each other despite the efforts of their far wiser companions. Murder does less to interrupt their happiness than spying helicopter mothers and stalking exes, but Holly is determined to investigate in order to ensure that her Oma’s first event as the mayor goes well. The charm of this series is undeniable, but what should never be overlooked is the sheer cleverness and originality of the writing. Readers can expect the unexpected with these novels, but the one guarantee will be the devotion towards and catering to the animals who become family. Genuine laughs, plot twists, and delicious recipes for all will delight in a series that continues to only get better.

Can Your Dog Improve Your Love Life?
by Krista Davis

I write the Paws and Claws Mystery series, so I try to stay current on developments regarding dogs and cats. Sometimes I am blown away.

Mission Impawsible involves a matchmaking event called Animal Attraction. It takes place on Wagtail Mountain, where cats and dogs are welcome everywhere. There are even special menus for them in the restaurants. So it only seemed logical that the matchmaking event would incorporate dogs and cats, right? After all, it’s much easier to meet someone if you can talk about his or her dog who is standing right in front of you wagging his tail. No need for awkward come-on lines. Plus, if you’re a cat lover with six cats, wouldn’t it be nice to find a mate who shares your fondness for felines?

As far as I know, there hasn’t yet been a matchmaking festival outside of Wagtail that involves pets. But I had no idea that there’s an online matching site for pet lovers. Or that there’s an app where you can post your dog’s picture to meet up for a date at the dog park!

Kloof.com is the app, and they’re way ahead of me in believing that our pets can help us find the right human mates. They even did a survey to find out which breeds attract the opposite sex. Turns out men like women with Golden Retrievers, and women are most attracted to men with German Shepherds. Don’t fret if you don’t have those breeds, others are popular, too. But watch out if your furry friend is a poodle—seems they have a party girl image!

In Mission Impawsible, the cats, dogs, a clever little matchmaker, and two meddling mamas do their best to get the right people together. But I’m not telling which match works out.

  6. I woke up this morning after having a crazy dream. I rescued a dog tangled to something in high water (I went to sleep watching the Weather Channel). Anyway by the time I got us close to shore, I realized that my dog was not tangled but attached to something. I didn’t want to bring it out of the water until the police got there. Seems the dog was one of theirs and the end of the leash had a hole in his head. Feel free to play with this if you want.
