Nestled in the heart of Sanger, CA, Off the Grill is more than just a local eatery—it’s a testament to the power of family, resilience, and great food. Owned and operated by Elsa Reyes, this charming restaurant has become a go-to spot for those craving delicious, affordable meals that satisfy every appetite.
Off the Grill’s story begins with Elsa’s dream of building a family business that would serve her community. “After many years working in the food industry, I saved enough money to embark on my journey as a restaurant entrepreneur,” she shares. Although she originally envisioned a Mexican restaurant, fate had other plans. A conversation with the previous owner of Off the Grill opened a new door, and Elsa took the leap to purchase the restaurant, beginning her culinary adventure.
The connection to the Sanger community is at the heart of everything Off the Grill does. Situated on Academy Avenue, a bustling corridor in the city, the restaurant attracts everyone from early risers grabbing breakfast to busy families stopping by for a quick, hearty meal. Elsa explains, “Sanger is a community composed of working-class families and individuals. With that in mind, we strive to keep our menu affordable.” Her team, many of whom attended Sanger Unified Schools and live locally, further deepens the restaurant’s ties to the area.
Off the Grill’s menu is designed to offer something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a juicy burger, a fresh salad, or a satisfying BBQ plate, you’ll find it here. Elsa takes pride in the quality of their dishes, noting, “Our burgers are made with quality Angus beef and served on a buttermilk bun—we strive to keep it simple, memorable, and enjoyable.” For first-time visitors, the buffalo fries, Philly cheesesteak, and signature BBQ plates are must-tries.What truly sets Off the Grill apart is its creative approach to engaging customers. The restaurant’s active presence on social media showcases mouthwatering photos, videos, and promotions that keep fans coming back for more. Daily specials ensure there’s always a new reason to visit, from discounted tri-tip sandwiches on Tuesdays to weekend breakfast burrito deals.
Running a restaurant, however, hasn’t been without its challenges. Like many small businesses, Off the Grill faced significant hurdles during the COVID-19 pandemic, including public health restrictions and rising product costs. Elsa reflects on this period, saying, “Navigating through this time was tumultuous, but overcoming it made us more resilient.” This resilience is evident in the restaurant’s ability to bounce back stronger, continuing to serve the community with the same dedication and care.
Looking ahead, Off the Grill has big plans. Elsa hopes to expand the space to include a dining room, extend operating hours into the evening, and add more breakfast options to the menu. “We’re also looking to hire more staff as we grow,” she adds, emphasizing her commitment to enhancing the customer experience.Whether you’re a Sanger local or just passing through, Off the Grill is a must-visit spot that combines great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a deep love for the community it serves. Stop by for a meal that’s not just satisfying but also supports a local business with heart.
