Marjorie Kane and Alan Lockem are both business and personal partners. She is an former exotic dancer, and he was a free-lance photographer; now they are private consultants. Both are past middle age but in great physical and mental shape. When Marjorie’s cousin, Edie Black, calls for help in clearing her son of a murder charge, Marjorie and Alan are off to Grand Lac, Idaho, to help out.

bookJack Ketchum owns a parcel of land on the side of the mountain that has no access to a road because he wouldn’t participate in the homeowner’s meetings as they divided up the land into personal lots and planned access roads. When he realizes he is at a standstill with his development plans, he gets drunk, takes a huge bulldozer, and plows himself an access road right thru every other owner’s property. Outraged they initiated lawsuits to stop him from going further. When his body is found on the mountain side with a bullet hole in it, the police arrest Sam Black because he was recently seen having a loud argument with the dead man.

As Alan and Marjorie quietly investigate, they ally themselves with the county sheriff who believes there might be corruption in the town’s police force that could hinder or stall the investigation. Both Jack and Sam operated as stock market day traders, was Jack bilking his customers? Alan is kidnapped and left on the mountainside to die from thirst and hypothermia, and nobody involved is telling the complete truth. Corruption, theft, and shady business deals make it hard to narrow the suspect list down.

This was a compelling read! I enjoyed the sleuths being past middle age and how their former occupations have made them the people they are today. The murder plot is well conceived and plotted out. I really enjoyed the pacing of the book and how it was laid out. I couldn’t wait to get to the end to find out the truth and was totally surprised by the murderer and the reason they did it. A great read for anyone who likes a good mystery read. I would love to see Marjorie and Alan become a series!
