Meg and her K-9, Hawk, are a search and rescue team with the FBI. They’ve had some scary and dangerous assignments before but the current one is likely to be the most hazardous yet.
A plane carrying the executives and board of directors for a pharmaceutical company with an iffy reputation has gone down in the Colorado mountains. Seconds before it disappeared from radar, the flight attendant managed to send a message to the nearest control tower and alert them—the plane has been highjacked and there’s one dead so far.
Then there’s silence.
Meg and Hawk, Brian and Lacey, are on the next flight out to find the crash site and face bad weather, crumbling rocks, low visibility, altitude sickness, low oxygen levels while traveling on foot at night—all at over 10,000 feet up the side of a mountain. Meg has a fear of heights and isn’t too sure she can overcome it, even to rescue potential survivors. Still, she’s working with Hawk, one of her most favorite living beings as well as Bryan and his K-9, Lacey. With the help of a rescue team and FBI agents, a lot of equipment, and a focus on the job, the team begins to track the downed plane.
This is book nine in the series and the most hold-your-breath-turn-the-page case yet. Besides hoping for survivors, the teams have to be prepared for the hijacker to still be alive and definitely not wanting to be captured. The weather poses the biggest threat. With each page, Meg and the others are in more danger.
To tell more details would take away from the thrill of reading the story yourself. The amount of detail in describing the climbing equipment, the terrain, what to expect, and the impact on humans and K-9s, shows meticulous research that only adds to the story. Be prepared to feel the chill and difficulty breathing as you read. It’s that real.
Driscoll also writes the NYPD Negotiator books and a standalone, Echoes of Memory, recently reviewed in KRL.
