In October of 2023, Kelly and her family adopted two rats from Rattie Ratz. Kelly had limited experience with small animals but her husband had grown up with hamsters, so they were somewhat familiar with the idea of pocket pets. Kelly says that they had heard plenty of good things about rats as pets—particularly their intelligence, sweet nature, and suitability for children on the autism spectrum, and were curious to learn more. The family’s introduction to Rattie Ratz came through an event the rescue was holding at a local pet store. Kelly recalls that the chance to meet and interact with the rats helped them feel confident in adopting from Rattie Ratz. Inspired by the positive interaction, they decided to welcome Jeff and Monty into their home.

Jeff and Monty

Kelly describes the adoption experience as smooth, saying that her family felt informed and supported throughout the whole process. However, like any new pets, Jeff and Monty needed time to adjust to their new environment. “When we first brought them home, they were a bit shy,” Kelly shares. But with patience—and the discovery of their favorite treats—the rats began to warm up to their new family.

Now settled into their home, Jeff and Monty have become cherished members of the family. Each rat has a distinct personality: Jeff is the adventurous one, eager to explore and the first to come out for playtime. Monty, on the other hand, has a quieter demeanor. “The best part is seeing their different personalities and watching our kids interact with them,” Kelly says regarding the joys of having rats.

The family’s 11-year-old son has taken on the responsibility of caring for the rats, handling tasks like feeding them and cleaning their cage. When asked about the pros and cons of owning rats, Kelly admits that maintaining a clean cage—especially with male rats—can be a bit of a challenge. However, the most positive aspect for Kelly’s family has been watching their children learn about responsibility and how to care for another living being. “It’s amazing to see how nurturing and attentive they’ve become, building a special bond with the rats while learning important life skills,” Kelly writes.

As for advice for new rat owners, Kelly emphasizes patience. “Be patient and let them have time to adjust to their new home,” she advises. With a little patience and care, these small but intelligent creatures can become loyal and loving companions.

Jeff and Monty’s journey from shy newcomers to integral parts of the family is a testament to the joys of rat ownership. While there are challenges—like the need for regular cage cleaning—the rewards far outweigh them. For Kelly’s family, adopting Jeff and Monty has been a heartwarming and enriching experience, proving that sometimes, the smallest pets can leave the biggest marks on our hearts.
