Mail and…Murder!

Bernadette Butler, informally known as Bernie, widowed for ten years, loves her job delivering mail to the residents of Sugar Creek Gap. Her route is the downtown area and houses surrounding it with her first stop the nursing home inhabited with seniors requiring all levels of care. Visiting is always a bright spot in her day, and in many ways, an opportunity to push worries out of her mind; her feelings toward her late husband’s best friend is a case in point. Her BFF Iris Peabody volunteers there, and although she’s known for her delicious treats at her Pie in the Face bake shop, she is also known for the “special feelings” she gets about people. She’s not psychic, it’s just a feeling, and her track record is more miss than hit. Case in point: a predicted kiss from a cute boy turned into Bernadette on the ground, and the prom date turned out to be for Iris, not Bernadette. However, the “feeling” something was wrong with Bernadette’s husband Richard turned out to be tragically spot on, and recently her “feeling” about Mac Tabor, her husband’s best friend, was oddly correct, too. So, the two agreed Iris should keep these “feelings” to herself…until today.

Address for Murder earns 5/5 Sparkling Mail Carts…Entertaining Fun!
Recognizing the “B-12!” call coming from the main room at the nursing facility, Bernie is beckoned in by Iris, her long, long-time BFF. The room is filled with serious Bingo fans their attention on their cards. She waves here, she nods there, she chats with Elsbeth Clark who chose residence here rather than with family, and she overhears Luke Macum sharing his serious concerns about his aging uncle: memory loss, hygiene issues, hoarding junk. Lee’s behavior is also causing problems with neighbors, Walter Ward, the real estate agent trying to sell the next-door property, and Carla Ramey, the president of the beautification committee. Walter is upset his livelihood is being impacted by the state of Macum’s property. Carla is spiffing up everything from storefronts to private homes to Bernie’s new mail cart furious that Lee’s house could cost her the crown jewel of her tenure…winning the Make Kentucky Colorful spring campaign. Bernie sees Iris, working her Bingo personae, but she has a look of concern. Bernie doesn’t want to know if she’s had one of her “feelings,” but Iris can’t hold it back, “There’s something about Little Creek Road.”

Little Creek Road sure is something. Mac lives there, and Bernadette’s feelings for him may be turning into something. Mac has two investment properties there being managed for sale by Walter Ward, and the rats in the cellar of one is something. The Front Porch Ladies live there watching and gossiping about all the somethings that catch their interest. Lee Macum, Luke’s aging uncle, lives there, too, and his house is quite something as his hoarding impacts his living condition as well as the look of the area. And the conflict with Luke, Walter, and Carla are something, but…murder?

Entertainment Delivered! Tonya has delivered another engaging drama in her Mail Carrier Mystery series. I am a fan of all of her series because her writing style is entertaining with descriptive language, dialogue that illustrates well the tone and various personalities, and a fun Kentucky flare. But, this series is at the top with a clever mystery exploring selfishness, revenge, and greed, wonderful characters from millennials to baby boomers to senior seniors, and an ending that included some nail-biting peril and “Whew!” satisfaction. Bernadette is a fifty-something widow with realistic fears and challenges entering a more romantic relationship with a close friend; she’s also still a mother, despite her son being an adult himself with the prospect of being a grandma that makes her a character to whom many can identify. Ok, it’s a cozy mystery and amateurs investigate murder with or without support from official channels (Bernie has a love/hate relationship with Sheriff Angela Hafley), but Tonya wraps it up in a quaint small southern town with characters readers might recognize as friends and family and a story that might be found in the headlines. I loved it!

And a Bonus! I love finding extras in my cozies! Tonya has given everyone a little taste of recipes referenced in the story like [Iris’s] Bonbon Cookies, [her mom’s] Chocolate Crinkles along with my favorite Chocolate Chip Blondes with peanut butter and the intriguing…Pepper Cookies! Wow!

Alert! I look forward to the release of book three All She Wrote sometime in 2020. Also Tonya Kappes announced that she’s contract audio versions for her three book Mail Carrier Mystery. Exciting 2020!
