It’s after 10 p.m., and I still have the drapes to my living room picture window open. The moon is so full and bright tonight, shining like the Times Square Ball I watched drop yesterday as we ushered in 2026. Large downy flakes of snow are floating down like feathers into the waiting arms of a glistening snow mounded lawn. All is calm except my mind that has a freight train of thoughts barreling through it. The mental journey, a poignant one filled with concerns for our future as a nation and excitement as I plot the story of my life for 2026. It’s a new chapter, and I intend on filling each page with content that brings me closer to my personal goals. One of those goals is to read more books that truly bring me joy, and abandon those books that do not. All too often guilt forces me to continue reading a book I’m not fully invested in. I make excuses that lay the blame on me as a reader; I didn’t read far enough in, I’m just missing a concept, I didn’t approach it with an open mind … the list goes on. The truth is, it’s no one’s fault. Books are like people. I’m not going to get along with or like everyone I meet. I just need to treat them with respect and move on even if I’m not finished with them. I have a robust TBR (to be read) list that has more entries than I have lifetime left to read them. So this year, I have applied the Marie Kondo principle of organizing to my reading selections. If the book doesn’t “spark joy” as Kondo would say, it’s time to let it go. While my reading regimen was invigorated in 2025 with our year-long KRL Coming Attractions Column Reading Challenge, where I challenged myself to read books that were out of my comfort zone, this year we’ll be turning the tables. You guessed it! For 2026, I’ll be featuring a few book selections from the Coming Attractions Column that are a must read, and challenging KRL readers to choose from those featured and read one that sparks joy in them.
For January, I’m featuring eight books that are must reads for me because each ticks a cozy mystery or historical mystery box that “sparks joy.” These boxes include charming British whodunits, perfectly brewed tea, locked room mysteries, trains, baking shows, book clubs, Jane Austen inspired characters, a touch of romance, a crime fighting couple or two, and Sherlock Holmes. As always, if you don’t find my suggestions to your liking, there are plenty new exciting releases to choose from. And remember, if you enjoy this monthly column, feel free to share the link to it on your social media channels. Spreading the word is the best way to show your support.
