We have just said goodbye to one year, while ushering in another, and I can’t help but feel reflective. As is the tradition, shared by so many of us regardless of religious or cultural beliefs, it is time for us to take an inventory of our lives and resolve to shed unhealthy habits for healthy ones. For me, there is no better place to start than with one of my passions—reading. Reading is a healthy habit that does more than just educate or entertain; it exercises our minds as we age. But this year, I have found it particularly difficult to carve out the time to read as much as I normally would. My numbers have been dwindling and despite having a fully stocked TBR list, with authors whose work I’ve loved over the years, I’m in a reading slump. I am determined to shed this slump, and several unwanted pounds, in 2025.
In fact, after a lot of deep reflection I realized that what my reading regimen is missing is a challenge. Which is why I am launching the first ever KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge! Each month I will announce a self-imposed reading challenge for the month and feature five books listed in the Coming Attractions column that support my challenge. As readers of the column, you are welcome to join me by adopting the challenge for yourself or simply wishing me well along the way. At the end of 2025, I’m hoping we will all be able to celebrate having read 60 books as a community while expanding our reading horizons.
To kick off the first month of our KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge, I decided to focus on firsts. The Featured Five for January introduces new-to-me authors who have just released a first book in a new series. You are welcome to read these five new books with me during the month of January, or pick five new-to-you authors who have a first book in a new series releasing this month. Remember, this is just for fun so it’s okay if you choose not to participate.

When Peyton Hart returns to the quaint town of Wallshire, she hopes to reconnect with her estranged mother and maybe even find her place in the world. Instead, she’s thrust into a nightmare when Katarina, the enigmatic owner of the tea shop, Steeped in Mystery, is found dead—poisoned by her own brew. To make matters worse, Peyton becomes the prime suspect in the investigation. With the sharp-eyed Detective Levi Kessler questioning her every move, and the town buzzing with gossip, Peyton finds herself caught in a web of secrets she never knew her mother was hiding. Determined to clear her name and uncover the truth, Peyton dives headfirst into Wallshire’s quirky community, where everyone seems to have something to hide. From cryptic notes in the tea shop to rivalries that run deeper than the finest Darjeeling, Peyton must navigate a blend of danger and charm to piece together the mystery.

A cursed quill, a snarky owl shifter, and a mystery that could rewrite history. Marlot has a knack for finding things—lost keys, stolen artifacts, and occasionally trouble. When a desperate client hires her to track down an enchanted golden quill rumored to be cursed, she knows it’s not going to be easy. What she doesn’t expect is for her rival, a sly fox shifter with a penchant for getting under her feathers, to be hot on the same trail. The deeper Marlot digs, the more dangerous the hunt becomes. With whispers of a secret society, ghostly warnings, and a curse that attracts more than its fair share of supernatural predators, it’s a good thing Marlot has a sharp mind and sharper claws. But when the quill’s power begins to awaken, Marlot realizes this job could cost her more than her reputation—it might cost her everything. For fans of cozy mysteries with a magical twist, Cursed in Feathers is an enchanting blend of wit, intrigue, and supernatural adventure. Perfect for readers who love snarky heroines, slow-burn rivalries, and a touch of the paranormal.— Cursed in Feathers by Wynn Valentine

But when her arrival is greeted by the local law enforcement, Annie senses things are not quite as they seem in this idyllic town . . . everyone knows everybody in Franklin yet when it comes to the death of the shop’s previous owner, nobody seems sure of anything! Annie soon discovers that Eleanor Danton was in fact murdered, strangled with her own yarn . . . invigorated by her need to find out the truth, and feeling somehow at home with the friendly bunch of local yarn artists who frequent the shop, she sets out to find the killer. New York City and Washington, DC, 1951. Kay Thompson—secretary to Eleanor Roosevelt—is a young woman of conviction navigating the post-World War II period. But can she expose the dark truth about a transatlantic murder mystery unfolding before her eyes? Previously fired for speaking out against workplace injustices, twenty-five-year-old Kay Thompson finds her true calling once appointed to support Eleanor Roosevelt, a champion of human rights known as ER among those in her inner circle. Kay fully embraces her new role as the former First Lady’s right hand—typing up daily columns and juggling a blur of political meetings, ribbon cuttings, and charitable dinners. It’s not until a dead body is discovered on a train that her most compelling task comes into focus. Stunning Susie Taylor had star quality. Judging from her photos, it’s clear why she left Sweden with plans to make it big on Broadway. But when ER enlists Kay’s help on a discreet investigation about Taylor’s sudden disappearance, the two suspect the up-and-comer was concealing secrets about her real identity and motives—all leading to her murder at Washington’s Union Station. Plunged into a living Alfred Hitchcock film, an unseasoned Kay and a shrewd ER side with a handsome detective on a search for answers. What was Susie’s connection with a charismatic Soviet UN delegate and an atomic energy researcher? As ER makes it her mission to find out, danger looms upon the discovery of another body. Now, Kay must play a central role in exposing the killer—before she becomes the next rising beauty to meet a cruel fate.— Eleanor and the Cold War by Ellen Yardley, Kensington
An acquaintance with death—Haunted by her family’s unsolved murder sixteen years ago, Leonora Spencer is familiar with death. As an assistant in her elderly uncle’s London morgue, she uses her photographic memory to catalogue details for his coroner reports. She also isn’t opposed to helping during postmortems when his skilled hands begin to shake. After a thief breaks into the morgue and steals a locket from a corpse, Leo is determined to understand why, even if it means going against Detective Inspector Jasper Reid’s express orders to keep her nose out of it. Born and bred in the East End slums, Jasper Reid’s recent promotion to the detective branch at Scotland Yard is a long step up from his murky past . . . a past he can’t afford to reveal to anyone. The last thing he needs is a muddled case that connects to the criminals he once associated with, and to the well-known eccentric Leo Spencer. Her stubborn resolve to undermine Jasper’s investigation tests his patience and the complicated history they share. When the missing locket and a handful of suspicious deaths point to a mysterious buried object, Jasper grudgingly accepts Leo’s help to locate it. But someone is watching, and the more they uncover about a deadly blackmail plot, the closer Leo and Jasper get to becoming the killer’s next targets. — Shadow at the Morgue by Cara Devlin
